New to me 1969 johnson 9.5hp seahorse

Off the top of my head:
1. Both cylinders firing? Sometimes it's hard to tell.
2. Low compression would cause bad idling.
3. You're right. Carb rebuild is always a good thing for an old, unknown motor.....as well as a new impeller.

silly question Install bolt to deter motor theft

Bolt it! Making it difficult for a thief is a good thing.

A South Carolina chapter of AOMCI is having a meet soon. I can't find the particulars at the moment. You might just find a small '71 outboard there to match your boat! Found it.....copied and pasted the info: Carolinas AOMCI (NC,SC, and SWVA) is having a two day event at Hickory Knob Resort on Clark...

New Tohatsu break in

Jake11 wrote:Thanks guys. Decided to just do it all on the water. So far I love it. I'm just finishing up the less than half throttle phase. At half it pushes my 14k 12mph according to GPS. Not bad
Probably a very, very good decision.
And...you get to enjoy the ride!

Is this motor worth buying?

Yes, good advice, in a tank, no muffs, so you know the water pump works by the pee stream. Then check the foot oil for water. And the tank water for oil!
Then it might be a good motor if you take it home and service everything.

Jake, I can think of only two issues. The water temperature in your tank. I think that would be nominal. The other is the carb drawing in exhaust gas. Set up a good fan and blow the exhaust away from the motor. You want fresh, clean air going in. But nothing beats real life conditions. As in, 'out o...

How much weight on the tongue?

I'd like to take back my earlier statement of 2/3rd's. 10% sounds MUCH better. Ummm...OPPS. I'll remember that!

How much weight on the tongue?

I remember someone saying 2/3's of the weight should be in front of the axle. It made sense to me.

strangest red drum I ever saw

I don't know that we do that in Northwest Florida. I'm thinking it's evolution taking a crack at something new.
Or the result of a red fish and a speckled trout hooking up at a school graduation. Pun intended. Alcohol and bad judgement may not be limited to just humans. :LOL2:

1971 johson 9.5

shawnduframe, there are no simple mods that can be applied to this motor to boost speed. The Evinrude/Johnson 9.5hp from 1964 to 1973 was a unique style motor. It was made to fulfill the presumed market desire for a compact low profile motor. The 9.5hp has a different carburetor setup, exhaust setu...
