Hey guys!

Similar story to most. Bought a boat started fixing it up and found this website and it's awesome!!

So much help, especially the search feature. This is my first boat, first mod, etc. Long time fisherman, always from the bank and I have always been jealous of the boaters! I live in Lynchburg VA, and we have great fishing around here, especially catfishing, but without a boat I am really restricted.

So I convinced the wifey to let me spend some money and bought a BOAT! WHOOOO HOOOOOOO!

Except I found out two things.
1. The money doesn't stop when you buy the boat
2. Fixing a boat takes a long, long time.

So I have been spending all my fishing time working on the boat. It was a good deal. $400 bucks for the boat, trailer(tilt), one working transom mount trolling motor, one non functional bowmount TM and a 25 horse '73 Evinrude. Not bad, right?

Pics to follow.

A few pictures....

Welcome aboard. Sounds like you got a good deal on the boat. Good luck and keep us posted.
Thanks man, I will...

Question for everyone...I'm going to put a deck in, but I have been thinking more and more about what I can do without putting on carpet. What do you think about this?

Here's what I put in my boat. It's called Multy Tile. I got it at Home Depot.

I like that...the idea is to just be able to spray the boat down.

Yep. It works great. I didn't want to go with plywood and carpet because I wanted to avoid the weight, and this is way easier to install and keep clean.

The foam looks a lot cheaper...I may try it.

Below is my boat...after my friends pranked it....

Of course, my neighbors are lesbians too...so I painted that over asap.

Thanks for joining! Looks like a good deal for $400. I would wash it and fill it with water to see if it leaks.

Well, first I stripped out the silicon, which was just spread thick.....everything white/light gray on the hull was silicon. Then I sprayed on some rustoleum non skid in all the cracks and over each rivit. Then painted with 3 thick coats on the outside over the aluminum primer and the same on the inside.

No leaks so far!

Updated picture....and a question.

It came with a 25 horse evinrude, but i put it in the shop to get it ready and they replaced an engine coil and just found out that the flywheel is cracked too. I'm running low on funds so I am considering putting it on craigslist for a trade with a working outboard of lower HP.

My question is this...I want to fish on semi-large lakes with the boat, but what kind of HP minimum would you recommend to be safe out there?

It looks about like mine. It is rated at 40hp max. I can tell you it won't plane with a single 9.9. That will be slow, burn a lot of gas, and may push the bow up where you can't see over it. Mine has twin 9.9s, and I would want any less. I don't know what it will do when I start adding some weight with the mods. I think I'd try to fix the 25hp if all it needs is a flywheel. Look for one on ebay. I think the 25 is a good size for that boat.

Thanks...I saw your boat, I like it!

I'm not much at mechanical stuff...and didn't see a flywheel for that year, its a 74. Would another year fit it?

Yea, I would replace the flywheel if the motor is a good runner. Another motor could mean a new set of problems. Lots of used parts available for that era. If you want to DIY, check your local salvage yards or Ebay, Craigslist, etc.
You can check this website to see which year fly wheels are compatible (https://shop2.evinrude.com/). 1973-1975 25hp use the same flywheel part number (0581109).
Else, if you want to avoid the hassle just have the shop swap it for you.
Good luck.
