I found a relatively inexpensive boat on Craigslist. The seller seems honest about the condition (decent shape with a few patched rivets that were leaky). He sent a few photos and there appears to be a decent sized dent in the transom. It's hard to tell from the photos if the wood in the transom is cracked but I'd imagine it would have to be... But that's not a deal breaker - wood is replaceable. Do you think that the dent would be able to be hammered out enough that I'd be able to replace the transom wood?

It's a 14' StarCraft which he measured to be 31ish across the floor 45ish wide at the top. It'd be a good upgrade from the 12' vhull that seems to be getting undersized with the two kids on board.media_5ca3cf4d94e536.69667247_1b3566d7ff92c5e599b0cdbc5c48721fd86cb37586a943eb3a262e4f85cc2d2e.jpegmedia_5ca3cf4de5fd38.40363707_a8726d8c1ffdf1d2e0a48723d08d233d6487ed20cb98b418472ee7bf806cede7.jpegmedia_5ca3cf4db38a54.36687509_5632743658e1005020d3c7748a765b8ab591f877fc9bc7fe1c20c275d5357536.jpegmedia_5ca3cf4dccf1d7.49177097_39fb88b6213685ec7423ac5db63834526b7237b4eeb1a14d89e88b0492dfd883.jpeg

Yes it is repairable, but you will need to pull the wood off.

If you don't expect a perfect (non-detectable) repair, it will go fairly quickly.

Hope you got a good deal on it.

I think the issue is going to be it's only a 32" wide floor. It will not be as stable as a 36" or wider boat.

I would use a porta power hydraulic ram or friction jack and roughly push the dent out. Then finesse it the rest of the way with a body hammer and dolly block. Harbor Freight sells that stuff at a reasonable price.

I ended up passing on it. It was a great deal and I may have been able to repair it well enough but I hadn't considered how narrow it was (thanks for the heads up!). I'm going to keep my eyes open for something a little wider that's hopefully in better shape even if it means I spend a little more.

We're still able to get out of the water so it's not a huge rush.

If anyone near Mass. is looking to downsize to a 12' (or 10' or even 8') just let me know!
