I'm new to the site and just got my second boat...Don't Make Cents, Either. Its an older Lowe 1436 that needs a little love...

Looking for ideas, and love what I have been seeing on the forum...couple of questions that I would like you guys to weigh in on....

1. Would 6.5hp be enough to push this boat at a respectable speed, maybe 10-15mph? I plan on fishing small ponds and lakes with the exception of my yearly trip to reelfoot lake.

2. There is a hole on the right side of the boat just below the water line, about 1/2 inch in diameter, and not really enough metal left to pound the hole closed and weld it, cut a patch and weld on both sides? Then how do I smooth the outside? I'm not worried about drag but do plan on painting the boat and would like it to look somewhat respectable...or should I just used the hole for a livewell?

Here's a pic...sorry about the quality, cellphone...at least the boat fits in the heated side of the shop!

:WELCOME:

Nice looking project.

You could use the hole for an intake for a live well.I would make an aluminum patch, pop rivet the patch on the inside, and fill the outside with Marine Tex putty or JB Weld. Then prime and paint.

No watersking huh? Oh well....

I know this is a newbie question....but I havn't ever used rivets before...what size and what is involved? I'm new to a tinboat, fiberglass and wood I can do..

Welcome aboard mate :D

The 1436 is a sweet jon and makes for a great project, OK I say this cause I got one  well anyway here's what I did https://www.tinboats.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=3586

I took layout ideas off of this one (which is a 1436 also) https://userpages.sofnet.com/robertg/boat.htm he did a good job on the paint.

Post a good pic of the hole and we'll have a better idea of what you need for it.

This might help. Your speed will depend on how much you, gear, motor, fuel. boat weigh.
The Square Root of (Total Shaft Horsepower / Weight ) x Constant = Speed

My guess is that the 6.5hp will push you close to about 4-5 mph max.

I must not be using that calculator correctly...

With 900lbs weight (Max weight of boat 640 lbs +weight of boat itself ~200lbs + 60lbs to make it a nice round number)

Horsepower of 5 (6.5hp - 20% of parasitic loss)

Correction of 300 (I don't know why...that's its default)

=Speed of 17mph?
