Is it

necessary

or is it

preferable

that batteries being used are of the same age?

Thanks.

It is preferable if you want to maximize your $$$ in the batteries. The older battery will not charge like the newer battery, and will not hold its charge as long and will probably run down quicker. How old is the difference?

It is preferable ...
the more you charge a battery the shorter the charge lasts so you want to have them close to the same number of cycles

Difference is 1 year. an 06 and an 07. There's going to be an upgrade sometime during the this year, I just want to get the show on the road. I was more concerned with having a problem with the motor. There will, of course, be a circuit breaker.
It's a matter of cash layout and budgeting.

For the short term, no. The problem you will run into is that BOTH batteries will be useless once one of them dies. In a 24V system, it all boils down to the lowest common denominator.
