My buddy bought her in 1979…sold it to me in October…we had to drag her out from behind his shed…zip tie cotter pin to drive her home after I went and bought some new rims/tires…she was rough but didn’t leak but a little he said…when I was removing the old transom the drain plug just fell out…that was an oh my moment…working on the ‘68 Merc 200 20hp next…

That was a learning experience…but aluminum, cut it…5200 and rivets/stainless bolts…the drain plug was a cut and form of two dif plates….

Thanks both if ya! Motor is no longer “stuck” in gear…throttle tiller works now…time to replace some wires and work on pull rope…change lower foot oil and pull the impeller tomorrow…it’s just getting started…

Well…the foot won’t come off…yet…it hasn’t been off since 1977…can’t believe the impeller would still work…knocked a hole in the foot trying to pry the foot down…knew better…will have to weld that…looking for a 15hp in the interim…

Great work! This is the same color scheme I’d like to use for my boat when I paint this summer, so thanks for the reference :) She’s looking really nice.

I’m going to change the blue to navy blue…but the weather won’t cooperate.

Trying to decide if I put a 15hp or 20hp on it??? What do y’all think?

I had a boat that size when i lived out west. The 20hp i had was just perfect. Parts were easy to find and had the power to move the boat without any trouble.
Lakes with 2 people loaded down with plenty of fishing gear and plenty of "cooler"-no problem

The feather river, medium current with the same load proved no problem at all.

Remember that a larger motor doesnt get worked as hard for the same load as a smaller engine. This means less maintenance
Having said that, always keep your weight in mind to not overload the boat and motor for the conditions. The weight of your outboard factors into this

Thank you! I picked up a 15hp for a decent price - it’ll let me use her while I get the 20 back to working.

My buddy has this one…we are going out in a few weeks and seeing how we do in the River fishing…his boat was his GrandDads…his motor runs flawlessly. He thinks it is a 54-56 with a 54 ‘Rude on it…surprisingly the 7.5 will push him about 14mph and the motor only weighs 59lbs…I may regret not buying a 20hp a guy had offered me for a hot price of $600 and he stands by his work as well as warranties them for 90!days…

Just told a guy at work I’d take it…if I go missing…my wife did it - haha! Gonna pick it up next week - his Dad owned it (bought it used back in the day). Will start working on the pressurized gas tank tomorrow…gotta clean some sludge out (I bought it years back from him and never used it)…

That a real beauty!!

Thank you! Gonna take it out so he can see it (his Dad is passed) - in honor of his Dad!

The gas tank was not as easy as I thought…chain did the trick on the rust and sludge…got the gas gauge swinging freely…amazing that the paint on it is so flawless. Have to buy cork and make a new gasket for it…

Good news….didn’t sink! Haha! But to launch it in a River as her maiden voyage wasn’t smart! Took it the lake the same day - boat did great! Brand new gas can leaks so it kept running (pulling air) so I had to make it a short trip.
