Here is my mod of a 1648 aluminium Polar Kraft with modified V and flat bottom Jon boat into a 4 passenger Bass boat with lots of pictures. Almost done. Need to carpet the plywood panels, install trolling motor and outboard, then launch just in time to take her out...
Have heard that several people have had good luck using the hardener for Valspar Implement paint from Tractor Supply with Rust-Oleum oil based top paint. My local TSC no longer carries Valspar, they carry Magic paint instead. Anyone use the Magic hardener with Rust-Oleum?
OK, here is the latest work done. Cut and fitted the side panels, mounted the front and rear pedestal seat bases and installed the passenger seat bases. Next step is to remove all panels, spar varnish the cut edges, carpet and re-install.
Hey inlovewithsurfin, just took a look at the 3 boats you did. Great job, three times over. Don't know where you find the time to rehab three boats. Think one is enough for me. Has been a great learning experience though, especially with help from guys who have done it before. Besides, it gave...
Well here is the next installment. What a lot of work cutting and fitting each panel, not to mention installing the piano hinges. Took forever, then when you think all is aligned with a neat 1/4" spacing between panels to allow for carpeting, WHAM! Install the hinges and nothing is straight and...
Oh, I don't know about that, but thanks for the compliment. What got me started was seeing what an awesome job other people have done converting their Jon boats to a Bass boat. Now that the structural part of the boat is done I look at other mods and say, "Why didn't I think of that?"
So here is today's work. Not a lot to show for a days work but measuring, cutting, fitting and re-working every piece of plywood takes time. I am amazed when a panel can be measured, cut and the thing fits the first time.
Photo's show all the panels in place, except the side panels, and the...
Photos are of some of the plywood decks cut and fitted. The floor is carpeted just to see what it would look like but is not glued down yet. Plan to cut all plywood, fit it, spar urethane the sides, carpet and install. In the mean time will re-wire it.
Don't really know how to post my boat mod project to the "Link for Boat Modifications! Please post yours!" section in such a way that the project title will show up under the "Jon Boats" listings. If anyone knows how, please advise. For now, posted the link to the project below...
Well sometimes the mfg gets things wrong. They said to wait 24 hours before applying second coat, which maybe I should have done, but they also said to thin with not more than 10% mineral spirits. Had to thin to 25% to get it to spray well. So who knows.
Painted the boat today. First and second...
Here is the second coat of bottom paint. The big mistake I made was not sanding the 2nd primer coat to create a very smooth finish before applying the bottom paint. As it turns out the prime coat was not smooth so when you run your hand over the finish bottom coat you break the underlining bumps...
Here is the first coat of bottom paint. Tried to use the roll and roll method but it didn't work for me. The more I rolled the more air bubbles I got. Seemed to me the "sound" was sticky from the get go. Oh well, used the roll and tip method with foam roller and foam brush. Photos are of the...
I have the same boat but am not going to modify it. Am converting a 16' Polar Kraft Jon boat to a Bass boat. This link should get you to the boat project.
