Redbug, I know what you mean. I worked for 35 years, most of it as an outside technician for Ma Bell. I can't imagine doing that type of work again but then again I was much younger and dumber at the time!

IMO, you get what you pay for. I've had that brand products before and the quality matched the price. I now have Cobra hand held units, which are still on the lower price end, but seem to hold up much better.

Hope things work out for you. I had a basset hound once before too. She was a great family dog and required surgery for a hernia but money was no object for a family member. I was truly amazed at how fast she could run. I dubbed her the land torpedo!

Maybe check for any vacuum leaks? Can you slowly increase throttle without it stalling? Even tiny leaks will cause big problems. Good luck.

Please make sure your "mechanic" checks the lower unit for the proper oil. Run the motor in a tub of water before taking it out to get used to the feel of the throttle. Some throttles are really touchy, some are adjustable, some are tight, etc. Safety, safety, safety, safety...
