whats the best transom wood ?

Of the two, white oak is far better for outdoor use than red oak. Cypress or cedar hold up well too, although cedar is pretty soft.

    drain plug ideas?

Mine is a lever style plug and it is attached o the transom with a short length of lightweight chain. There is no way to lose it. Even at that I still have a spare. Call me paranoid........

    Flat bottom boats

A 48" wide jon in either flat bottom or mod-vee should be pretty stable. Wider is better though. Mine is a 1652 mod-vee and it's as stable as you could want - no concerns with 3 big guys walking around in it.

    Flat bottom boats

I have a 16' mod vee and I agree it is no better than a flat bottom in big water. The vee is just for show I think, but it doesn't hurt anything either. It doesn't draw any more water than a flat bottom and it's perfect for the rivers and inland lakes that I typically fish. I've run 30mph in...

Which wood do you guys use and why?

Check Craigs List. I don't know where you're located but I found this near me: https://grandrapids.craigslist.org/mat/1485073381.html

    4-stroke Eska?

Mine is a 1975 7.5HP with fwd and neutral. The clutch assembly seems to work really well still after all these years. If I go ahead with the conversion I will try to keep the clutch for sure.

    4-stroke Eska?

Here is the link to what I was looking at: https://grandrapids.craigslist.org/boa/1358109412.html It's even cheaper than I remembered - only $450. Mighty tempting, but a new 6HP Honda is only $200. Imagine how smooth my Eska would run with a Honda

CB radio for communication between boats?

Thanks for the replies. The CBs are basically free, just taking up space otherwise so I think we'll give them a try. The lake we will be on is 8 miles long so a 5-10 mile range should be OK. And if it gets wet and stop working, it's just one less thing I need to store

    4-stroke Eska?

I ran across an outboard on Craigs List that was a rebuilt old Eska leg and lower unit with a new 6.5 HP Tecumseh 4 stroke motor on top in place of the original 2 stroke. It was listed for somewhere around $600, but I just happen to have an old 7.5 HP Ted Williams (Eska) sitting around. Have...

CB radio for communication between boats?

Every fall I go fishing with a group. This year it will be 8 guys in 4 boats. The lake we go to is remote enough that there is no cell phone service. In years past we have used walkie-talkies to communicate between boats but their range is limited to a couple of miles and the batteries...

    Fisher Marine

I have a 1984 Fisher Marine Marsh Hawk. It's basically a 1648 mod-v jon set up for bass fishing. I searched on the hull ID number today and came across this: https://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_detail.aspx?id=FMC It looks like they are owned by Tracker now. I've only had mine for 6...

Post a Pic of your boat!

Thanks. Yes, the outline is still there where the shiny aluminum was protected by the decals. I have no idea what the colors were though. As I restore this boat it might be nice to reproduce the original logos with paint.

Post a Pic of your boat!

My first post....great site! Here's mine, a 1985 Fisher Marsh Hawk 16 footer. I bought it last fall just in time to store it for the winter. Out twice so far this spring and it runs great. The decals are gone so I don't know how the boat looked new. I looked through all 52 pages on this...
