New life for an old Smoker Craft

I picked up a 16' Smoker Craft last summer. I think it's a 1975. It looks identical to yours except yours can float. Mine is missing a Coast Guard plate on the transom. If yours has one, would it be possible to let me know what information is on it? I was wanting to know the h.p. rating and...

    pressure treated wood

$0.02 I'm new to boating, but I do have 30+ years in construction. The previous generation of treated wood was great for general construction, but it couldn't touch aluminum. I would see a serious degradation of alum flashing that resulted in water intrusion on projects less than 10 years...

New project for a new Dad.

That's a sharp boat! =D> I'm new to boating, how does it handle the Caloosahatchee? I was wondering about a bimini also, but don't know how much wind it could take.

14' Deep V Build and Trailer (Done)

I hope you don't mind if I refer back once in a while when I start my project. You have an awesome boat!

    1973 SmokerCraft 16' V hull [Major tasks completed - 6/1/11]

Very nice boat! After viewing yours I ran out to check on mine. It was still there. I too have a 73 Smokercraft. It's a 16' Tri-fisherman I think. Almost like yours, except not as nice. I bought mine with only two benches remaining and a transom that had to come out. Thats how its sitting right...

    Hull design.

Wow! Two months just flew by and I still have not touched that boat. To answer my own question, I think the boat is a Smoker-Craft 16' Tri-Fisherman. Now lets see if I can get it the water next spring. [-o<

This site has been a ton of help. I hope my garage empties out soon so I can put the boat in there. Maybe in a couple of weeks.

    New Guy From New England

That really is a cool boat. How does it handle the waves? I'm not talking about being out on the Atlantic during a storm, but putting around. Reason why I'm asking is I was wanting to build a dory sometime, but the flat bottom and v-bow had me wondering.

    Foam, Which One?

Same boring question: what is the best foam for irregular spaces? I have read posts on the subject, not all of them, and did not find out if the spray expansion foam is any good. Like a lot of boats it was used for support as well as flotation. It helped support the sheet of aluminum flooring...

    Hull design.

Thanks for the link Outdoorsman. I crunched the numbers and came up with 40 hp. That sent me looking at 40 hp tillers. Wow. New ones are crazy$ and older ones tend to be LS or remote or both. I'm going to have a hard time finding one in my price range.

    togaurds V-Boat

The boat is in a holding pattern. I have the factory floor up and will proceed with taking out the flotation. It's a combo of styro and icyinene(I think thats how its spelled). The floor was basically a sheet of aluminum spanning across the foam with it acting as support. Surprisingly sturdy...

    Hull design.

Thanks. I'll look for the horsepower calculator. Your right, there is no capacity plate on the boat. I have seen some write that it should take a 40 h.p., but I probably will never put one on. I just won't be getting on water that lends itself to going as fast as possible. Will probably hit Lake...

    Hull design.

I agree, it does look like a tri-hull. The new Smokers call it a hydra-lift and some other glass boats use something similar under a different name. I'm eager to see how it performs, although I will probably seldom see "cruising" speed. My father n law is letting me use his 1968 Johnson 20. I...

    Hull design.

I did some more digging around. Turns out is called the Hydro-lift hull. Well, thats what Smoker Craft calls it. It's reported to get the boat up an plane faster, be more stable in turns and reduce spray. I wonder how long they have been using it?
