Motor: 1979 Evinrude 15
Hull: 1972 Richline Sportsman
Prop: Stock
Mods: Plywood/Carpeted Seats and Floor, Extended front deck with aluminum frame, low back seat.
Weight: 606 Total
126 hull
50 mods
50 battery
25 trolling motor
75 motor
40 gas
40 gear
200 me
Plane Time: 5-8 seconds
Top Speed: 25 (not WOT) - likely 27 in calm water

what gear ratio is your motor? how are you reading your speed?

Likely whatever stock is... Not really sure - I've done nothing since I got it last summer and I don't think the original owner tinkered with it. As for reading the speed, I used a Garmin GPS.

Motor: Suzuki DF20A
Hull: 2015 Tracker Topper 1436
Prop: Solas 9.25X11
2nd highest trim setting due to some hook in the hull.
Mods: Plywood/Carpeted Seats and Floor
Weight: 665
165 hull
200 me
40 OTF Electric Jack Plate
50 Battery
40 Gear/Tackle Box
50 Plywood
120 Motor
Misc 20
Plane Time: 5-10 seconds depending on motor height
Top Speed: 28.2 up and down river in calm water with just me. 29 in chop. With another 200-230lbs person, about 26/27mph.
WOT RPM: 6140-6250 depending on motor height and load.

Likely won't break 30 without a prop change or without some more ballast in the rear.

UPDATE:

Changed to Solas 9.25X12. WOT brings you 29MPH on glass, 30mph on chop. Hit 30 a few times but the river was busy. WOT RPM is right a 5850-5900 which is pretty hard on the motor full throttle. This setup is pretty much at the limit with all the drag on the hull with the motor jacked up to 1.25". Will need to switch to an All Weld 1436 to extract 32-34mph but its' certainly possible.

Holeshot is massively compromised; cavitation for days on the way to plane.

Any advice to reduce drag to get a few mph would be appreciated. I know these 1436s are not built for speed but it's a lot of fun to tinker with them.

9/25/24: UPDATE: Patched up the boat a bit due to large gashes and the boat taking on water. Tried on chop again while raising the Jack Plate incrementally at WOT. Found a setting on chop that gives me 30mph and will hold it there, RPMs are at about 5950 until the water transitions to glass, where it holds at 29mph. Next step is a new 1436, less hook in a new hull should give me more flexibility when adjusting for speed.

I'm very happy with this setup.

Update: 10/8/24: Removed some waterlogged decking off of the front of the boat and shifted a few items around along the boat for heat distribution.

The rig hits 30 mph and stays there on glass. On chop, with some careful leaning and adjusting height, it hits 32mph and stays there. Final WOT RPM is 5900-6050. With the jackplate height and cruising at 20-25 mph (4500-5000 rpm), I'm estimating about 15mpg at WOT, which is wild.

For me, this 1436 project is a success.

Will upload video or pictures before it gets too cold.

Getting more speed on chop than on glass ....very surprising !! Are you using a GPS ?
I'm not terribly surprised. The bottom of my hull is rough so the friction is high on calm water. With small chop, you have less wetted surface and therefore a lot less total hull friction. I can only imagine what a new hull or Gator Glide would do for my speed.

I'm just using the GPS Speedometer app with the black interface on iOS.

Wow, a 12 year old thread. It was interesting to see how others were doing so I’ll add notes from some initial testing.

1. Motor: 20hp Suzuki (DF9.9B upgraded to DF20A), around a 2022 model
2. Boat: Lowe 1448M, 2023 new bare bones boat. Has a 20” transom, vee bow flat bottom jon)
3. Solas Amitas 9.25 x 10”
4. Aftermarket mods: None
5. Approximate weight: 585 lbs (400 lbs + me)
6. Approximate 0-plane time: Pops right out, less than 5 seconds
7. Top speed: GPS said 26 to 27 mph at 6100 - 6150 rpm. Lake, light ripple.

The prop quality is not that great. I think it could run a 9x11” with a better prop design. Minimal setup for testing, raised the motor about 1.5” with shims, checked various trim angles. Could improve on the prop design, prop height and maybe pick up a bit with ultraslick paint. I think 30 mph is achievable but, this boat will never be as light again. Next testing will be with a 25 hp Zuki after deck is completed.
