    Tiller To Console

Have you thought about stick steering? I have never installed one, but I have driven a boat with stick steering. One thing about a tiller boat is that you have a lot of control when fishing. That is a nice boat to be changing much. This is the place to go if you want mod ideas. plenty info.

    Tiller To Console

I did this to a 1997 Carolina Skiff J16. I had purchased the boat with just the front casting deck and 2 jon style seats. I put a 25 horse Evinrude on it. I took the seats out and put a fibreglass console in. I used the Teleflex rotary steering and cables. As far as converting the engine, it was...

A few questions, maybe you can help.

I know I must sound like a JB weld salesman but there is one more thing that the stuff is really good for. If you own a ABS canoe, not the cross-link poly ones, the JB weld is the same stuff Old Town sells at a much higher price. It's the stuff they sell in the clear packages. It all depends on...

A few questions, maybe you can help.

Sometimes the JB weld is not applied correctly and that will fail too. One way to prevent any type of epoxy from failing is to use aluminum screen wire as a reinforcing. This work when you have a crack, split, or small hole. If you have a split or crack, drill a small hole at the ends of the...

    Mount seat base plates

I have had good luck on several boats by using sheet metal screws and a marine sealant like 3M 5200 or the 3M 4200. The stuff makes a very strong bond with the aluminum. Rough up the area, clean with alcohol or acetone, put down the sealant, and screw the mount down with Stainless #12 or # 14...

A few questions, maybe you can help.

As far as the small leak JB weld does a great job. Just wire brush and clean with alcohol or acetone and you will do alright. I have patched many a hole with the stuff.

    First time runnin wire setup

Wiring boats seems to be a real hot topic both here and on other forums. I see a lot of threads on the type and use of various wire. After trial and error I have found the best thing is to break down and use marine wire. Anyone that is going to wire up any kind of boat owes it to themselves to...

    20hp Johnson running rough

Black deposits usually mean fouling, too rich. I would have the compression checked on the motor since it is fairly old. I just went through this with a 8 HP Mercury. I was a low hour motor but it had a stuck ring because ants had gotten in the engine. A compression check will tell you if the...

    welding for beginners?

I have to agree with the people here who say it's not easy at all. I have guys working for me who weld all the time and thin aluminum gives them fits. We are talking about using welders that cost thousands of dollars and having the right gases set up. We have some tin boats that we work out of...

    What type of screws?

Like others have said, use SS 1-1/4 screws, No. 12 work nice and use a 5/32" drill bit to drill your pilot holes. Marine aluminum is harder than you think so using the correct bit helps a lot. If you use the nice dome head phillips head SS screws with stainless trim washers it makes a very nice...

Should i install center console? HELP PLEASE

I have done it to a 25 Evinrude and a 16 ft skiff. I'm not sure it's really cost effective though. It might be better to trade for a remote 25 if possible. If you convert, you need to consider things like installing the remote choke, the cables for shifting and steering and such. The remote...

Worth paying for a marine specific radio?

I used a car type receiver in a center console boat for about 5 years and it did fine. Not in an enclosure , just mounted in the console. I did use the Poly Planer Marine speakers. Everything worked fine.

    Pilot hole sizes

This site is really loaded with information. I am always amazed at how hard it is to insert a stainless screw into these marine aluminum boats. The one thing that helps is the use of the correct pilot bit size. This may have been posted before, but it may help someone out. Use this chart and a...

    Splicing 6-gauge wire

Wiring boats seems to be a real hot topic both here and on other forums. I see a lot of threads on the type and use of various wire. Splicing 6-gauge wire

I guess I have made thousands of splices in my career and nothing beats the correct connector, the right crimping tool, and adhesive filled heat shrink. The voltage drop in DC wiring is considerable and that can cause trouble with trolling motors and such. Use the correct crimp by T&B or another...

    need help with mounting seats

I have had really good luck with the pin style seat bases. Even on boats with no way of getting to the fasteners from below. I take a large hole saw and cut out a hole for the seat base to mount flush, use 3M 4400 sealant/adhesive applied to base, and secure with #14 stainless screws. Use a 3/16...

Springfield Universal and Trac-Lock Chair Slide

I am not sure, I just want to move off center enough to be able to operate the tiller with a little more comfort. From looking at the pictures, it looks like a quality product. I'll probably order a couple and see what happens. Thanks.

Springfield Universal and Trac-Lock Chair Slide

Been lurking for a while and this is my first post. I have had several boats, both tin and glass that I have rigged for fresh and saltwater, so I might be able to contribute something in the future. I am considering buying a couple of the Springfield Universal Chair Slides for my Alumnacraft...
