I have a similar situation with my current boat. It sits right above the fender height. I added wheel spacers to get a little more clearance. Knowing what I know now, even using side bunks, I wish I would have opted for a wider trailer. Just my two cents.

I have a thought about the down rigger box shown in your photo. In keeping with Still Afloat's thoughts about increasing the space from the transom, you could make the box smaller. Additionally you could make it higher to be even with the top of the gunnel. For added rigidity, you can tie it...

Three things. Keep it light, keep it light, and keep it light! If you can ID the boat and find pics of the original, that would be a big step in bringing it back. On a 12' boat I personally would not go beyond adding back the bench seats.

Four or five years ago there was a similar recall on Klamath Westcoasters, a 15' walk-thru design. The fix was adding two large foam filled boxes in the rear. Basically removed any cockpit space and people were pi$$ed. Not saying the plugs are a great fix, but I would take the plugs over what...
