    Rebuilding a lower unit?

You can do it without a puller, but you have to be careful not to bust the lugs where the bolts go through. If you do, then you have to replace that carrier housing. First thing to do is to drain the lower unit lube, unless you want it everywhere when you pull the unit apart. Set down cardboard...

    craigslist find

If those are brand new engines, that's a really good price. I paid 2500 dollars for my engine with about 65 hours, and it was in near-mint condition. You can't go wrong with that engine. I've been extremely happy with mine. Another great advantage is the YDS system, as demonstrated in my...

    broken trailer

Good choice! =D> Torsion axles are outstanding for saltwater use. Leaf springs and the connecting hardware are the first thing to rust out on a trailer, and usually the crevice corrosion between the leaf spring and the axle will also destroy the axle, making repairs that much more costly.

    broken trailer

Uh-oh. Better call Wesco. (For those not familiar, that's Wesco trailer Mfg. located in WESt Columbia, SC) Get a galvanized, or better yet, aluminum trailer to replace that one with. And while washing it after every use still won't stop the effects of saltwater, it will extend the life of the...

    14/32 Jet Jon w/ yamaha 701

I also concur that 3M 5200 is the best bet for a secure bond between the fiberglass and aluminum hull. It has outstanding adhesion properties, and once it is cured, it's a nearly indestructible bond. Due to differing flex and expansion properties of these 2, simply glassing it won't work. Some...

    14/32 Jet Jon w/ yamaha 701

Yep, that's the one drawback about those top loader grates. Their open design may allow leaves and stuff to pass through with no problem, but it can also allow a rock, or a large stick to jam the impeller. I got rid of my top loader grate when I had a stick jammed in there causing major...

    Stump removal advice!

Back in the old days, you could just go to the hardware store, and ask for dynamite. They'd ask you "for ditching, or for stumping?" as from what I understand, there were 2 different types. You could also buy a Thompson submachine gun from the hardware store with no paperwork, no questions...

    Transducer for a jet jon?

Very true! That's the thing about a jet VS. an outboard. The outboard acts like a depth limiter, and will hit bottom long before the boat grounds out. With a jet, it's possible to keep going until you run out of water completely, and the boat comes to an abrupt stop (don't ask me how I know...

    Transducer for a jet jon?

From what I have read, thru-hull transducers don't work well with tin boats, only with glass boats. As long as you leave the adjustment bolt just loose enough that impact will allow the transducer to kick up, it shouldn't be a problem. I run a depth finder on my jet boat, and while I've slid...

Installing uhmw on my 1656 G3

I think that's similar to Line-X, isn't it? My boat was done with the Line-X 350, which is a mil-spec grade. It was sprayed about 125 mils thick. Although this gives it quite a bit of protection from corrosion and abrasion, I would not trust it against a rock strike. At some point, I might...

    One of my Hobbies

Y'all laugh about banjo music....but I've actually met one of the villains from the movie "Deliverance" Went up to his 77th birthday party back in August of this year. He lives up near Maggie Valley, and is quite an interesting character. And no, he's nothing like the part he played on the...

    My boat lift

Built this using 8x8" pilings, and 6" X 9 lb/ft I-beam. The brackets on top of the pilings are made from 1/4"x6" flat plate, bent to fit securely on top of the pilings, lag-bolted to the piling with stainless lags, and the beam is welded to them. I'm using 2 ton chain hoists, although, it's...

    My jet Jon build thread

If you line the inside of that engine cowling with flame retardant soundproof foam, it will make a world of difference. There's an egg crate foam available from mcmaster-carr, very light weight, and very effective at reducing noise under the cowling. This is how I have my boat set up, and to...

    My jet Jon build thread

Very nice work! I notice that this tunnel is set up for the exhaust to pass into it. That's a big advantage, as far as knocking down the volume. If you want to tone it down even more, I'd suggest installing rubber skirting that's trimmed to fit around the pump (look on page 10 of my boat build...

    New Type of Bug Repellant?

They work OK, but if you really want something to combat no-see-ums, you need something stronger than those bands. Mix 500ml gold listerine to 500ml witch hazel and 1 oz of tea tree oil. This mixture is very effective, and it's what I use throughout the summer.

Hahah, I just noticed this thread. Seems I was already well-known on this site before I became a member. That webtv site hasn't worked in quite some time. But there's a link to my build at the bottom of this post.

How many bunk boards for 1648 flat bottom?

Mine has 2 bunks: And they are spaced between the strakes: After having the bottom of the boat coated with Line X, due to its rubber-like surface, I found that the carpet bunks had way too much 'grab', I had to back the trailer much farther down into the water to launch. Also, since I...

Metal Gas Tank - Dent Repair

That would be hydrogen. Sodium hydroxide (lye) NaOH, reacts with H2O and Al to form hydrogen gas. I did a lot of experimentation with chemistry at home when I was a teenager. I used to make hydrogen gas by melting pennies for the zinc, and reacting that with sulfuric or hydrochloric acid. Also...
