    1989 Fisher Marsh Hawk 3V

Depends on what your performance requirements are. 70hp would probably get it around 40mph with a couple of medium size guys in it when it was new and probably be borderline scary in any kind of chop. I'd think mid to high 20's with a 30hp and the kids on board and provide a decent ride without...

    14' V length reduction

I'm guessing here, but lemme guess... you have a 15hp laying around and the idea of a 10' boat with that hanging off the back and going 35 mph? :) :) :) worse ideas have been born. Grin. I was thinking in terms of time / labor / costs / cost recovery if you decide to sell it. My projects tend...

    14' V length reduction

Just thinking out loud here, but I would think moving the transom forward of the next rib / brace in that picture would keep you from having to pull the sides in much if any and you could just re-rivet everything. Use the rib for a cut line and remove the rib / everything aft of that and you...

For guys with more $$$ than ingenuity

ah, yes, sorry, I missed the point where you were saying it would be much safer. Yeah, it would be a ton safer than some of the junk I (we) have used. I would say one thing about a gantry crane that I'm sure you guys have already thought about. All of the reasonably affordable ones that I have...

1994 Spectrum 16 Sport Rebuild? - Bouncing ideas around

According to my ex, half of the stuff you think you need and twice the money. :)

For guys with more $$$ than ingenuity

Dad nailed a couple of 2x8's to a wall stud and a couple of rafters in the garage, then propped up an old 4x4 fence post on the loose end. We used a 2 ton comealong to pull the engine in my first car and it scared the daylights out of fifteen year old me, but it worked fine. The comealong was...

    Mirrocraft max hp?

Sounds almost like asking permission and I'm the probably the wrong guy to ask if it's okay to put more HP on a transom. Legally, and this is strictly informational as I'm not a boat builder, but I found some USCG documentation on maximum HP calculation at...

70’s Starcraft 14’ Seafarer “By Golly”

Thank you for posting all of the pictures! I picked up a SeaKing 14' a couple of weeks ago, which is basically this same boat with a Montgomery Wards sticker on it, 20hp Johnson and all. I was wanting to build a console for it, maybe a deck, and put EVA on the bottom like you did. This thread...

    Longer Aluminum Boats

What about scabbing a lateral seam, basically a strap lap jointed on the inside of your butt joint?

    Tin boats on trailers

I always ran transom straps to the trailer frame on my older stuff with full length trailers, but the current trend in small trailers is to have the bunkers extend much longer than the actual frame. Going from the frame over the top of the gunwhales feels more secure than attaching to a piece of...

New 9.9 setup - is this enough?

The current Tohatsu / Mercury 9.9 and the 20 are the same displacement. They are roughly 330 cc or 20 cubic inch. The 9.9 has a restrictor on / before the throttle body and according to part numbers, a different ECM. The price of the ECM is, probably not coincidentally, is about the same as the...

How many of you enjoy a "Beater Boat?"

Perspective I guess... The people on the shore pointing and laughing at my beat up old Sea King are on the shore.

Looking to purchase a new Truck....what have you purchased?

A 7500 pound trailer pushes a 4500 pound hunk of anything around a whole lot more than it does a 7000 plus pound hunk of anything. I'd consider a dually if I were pulling something much over 5000 pounds regularly. They don't lane change with a side breeze like a half ton will.

    Prevalence of "Electric Only" Lakes?

( somewhat off topic ramble) I thought it ironic that I saw this thread while searching the internet for "Can I plane a Kayak?" and thinking about a high speed prop on a big trolling motor... 250w is about 1/3 HP gas equivalent, likely less power than half of a 55lb trolling motor. Not enough to...

Alumacraft 1542 Front Deck Layout Help Needed

I don't know if this will help any but Alumacraft did a 15' "Bass Pro" version in the 70's that had casting decks. I have one that is buried right now but I'll try to get some pictures of the structure for you. The brochure might give you some ideas? ALUMA-MY77-Catalog-ENUS

    Lug nuts 4 or 5?

Ha! I had to read the first post twice before I picked up on "lug bolts" like my Fiat has. Citreon used 3 on a bunch of their stuff but heck, so does my Snapper rider... wheels never fell off of any of my stuff so while I don't necessarily like it, they all seem to work. :) To answer the OP...

    2stroke to 4 stroke weight?

Out of the current crop of manufacturers, Suzuki seems to be the lightweights of the group. A new Suzuki 15hp short shaft is listed at 97 pounds. and "generally speaking" the Gamefisher 15hp is listed at 65 pounds. It's less than (1) full 6 gallon tank of fuel difference. I don't have personal...
