Want to buy a boat but worried

That old Alumacraft is a battle ship, great boats. Most of those older tins are built very well. At some point in the 70s, all boats under 20 feet were required to have flotation foam. It's a great asset to have, even if the boat is totally swamped it will not sink. To check the hull, crawl...

Outboard diagnostic software and hardware - recommendations needed

Vesselview will give you a trouble code and a vague description of the fault. But if you want the code setting criteria, or any sort of troubleshooting data, that info is dealer only. Even if you have the factory service manual with the list of trouble codes and the corresponding data...

Trolling Motor Selection - Volts, Thrust, and Shaft length

The cable wrapping thing on Powerdrives and Terrovas is a major annoyance, but I'm not sure that it has as much to do with the size of the motor/boat as it does poor programming on MK's part. Sucks when you're fishing a spot, not paying much attention and the motor wraps the cables then cancels...

Trolling Motor Selection - Volts, Thrust, and Shaft length

What they say regarding the motor being oversized is true, but only in terms of spot lock performance. They are roughly calibrated to ramp up speed in accordance with boat size, if the motor is undersized, the boat may drift off the waypoint before the motor is ramped up fully and brought back...

Paint question. Color showing up during sanding?

Looks to me like you have a couple different layers there, silver over the top of the blue/green. Might be the aluminum paint made for roofing.

Trailer mods and a couple of questions

I had the same trailer under my 14' Alumacraft. It was designed as a tilt trailer and I had a lot of difficulty loading it without using the tilt. I usually walked out on the trailer and guided it up by hand, which ended up in wet feet more than once. Otherwise it was pretty much impossible to...

Harbor Freight 420cc Predator Engine 10ft Jet Jon Boat (33mph)

That is very cool. Did you steal the jet setup out of a Jet ski? I've wanted to do something similar for a long time, but losing that much floor space is kind of a killer for a jon boat that you would actually use to fish out of. If I did it, I would use a semi-v hull, enclose the front and...

How to adjust free play in steering wheel?

It's worth noting that you can install the cable through the steering gear backwards on some models... Ask me how I know, hard to drive a boat that steers opposite!

    Service Manuals

What I most dislike about digital manuals is navigating them. Need to scroll through the whole thing most of the time, I have some manuals that are 3000 pages, it can take a while if what you are looking for is towards the back.

    Fish Finder Mounting

Just my thoughts, do what Thill did. Transducer on the trolling motor, and graph either on your bow plate or towards the front of the deck.

    Electronics, Fishing, and Trolling Motors

A single 24v battery will prevent you from running any of the onboard chargers on the market that can charge a lithium battery (like the Noco). Dual 12s is a better solution IMO. While you're buying, you might as well get a third for electronics, and a 3-4 bank charger. Do it right from the...

    '78 Johnson 25 frustrations

2-3 inches above the cav plate is more than enough to submerge the pump on most motors. I did outline that the water level needs to be higher than where the pump is positioned in the lower unit. Maybe you should read everything before waltzing in and assuming everyone else is wrong like you so...

    Biodegradable 2-stroke oil

It was my understanding that most, if not all modern two cycle oils are biodegradable.

    Old Gas

May have something to do with it. I'm lucky, there's a Pilot about 4 miles from me, they pump out a lot of gas in a day.

    Service Manuals

The thread used to be pinned in the motors section. I suspect that since @Jim (the previous owner of the site I believe) hasn't visited the forum in a year, the dropbox account hasn't been maintained either. It was a great asset on the site when it was working...

    '78 Johnson 25 frustrations

I'd say it should be going within ten seconds. I had an 83 25hp Johnson and it would start almost immediately. Check the easy stuff first. Are you running it on muffs or in a barrel? If it's in a barrel, the water level needs to be above where the water is positioned in the lower unit, usually...

    Service Manuals

I did end up buying one. Kinda sucks that the webpage doesn't work anymore, there was a bunch of free manuals on there.

    Battery Idea!

From what I have seen the M12 platform is kinda unique in that aspect. I know the M18 batteries do have their own BMS, so do most other higher voltage battery packs. Perhaps Milwuakee decided to put the BMS in the tools for packaging, or because the original M12 1.5ah batteries only had three...

Braided vs monofilament/ Sorry I originally posted this in the wrong place

I've found the best compromise is braid as a main line and your choice of mono/flouro leader. It will give you the sensitivity and longevity of the braid, along with the ease of tying and abrasion resistance of mono. I use the alberto knot to tie them together. I've found most braid to be...
