A quick survey who trailers their boat with the motor in gear?

I can't believe this has gone on for 3 pages. Tell the boy to stop listening to Billy Bob and Bubba down at the boat ramp!

    '57 3hp Johnson operating RPM

Probably running on one cylinder. They will run pretty good on one. Pull each plug wire to see. Pull the flywheel and install new condensers bare minimum. Preferably new coils as well and the old ones are no doubt on their last legs. Clean and set the points at .020. Watch the points arm when...

    Used outboards

The most important test for an engine once you have looked it over and checked compression is that it is able to idle in gear in the water. This is the best sign of a well sealed engine. Of course you will want to check to make sure it does not jump out of gear, pumps, etc. but a good idle is...

    Outboard motor controls- compatibility

No. When it comes to throttle and steering items, these are absolute safety items. I refuse to guess and give advice when I am not absoutely sure of what I am saying. I would encourage anyone else to do the same. I know there are universal controls, that there are differences, however minor, in...

    Outboard motor controls- compatibility

Stroke length is pretty universal (couple variations) as is trunnion to engagement pin. There is more than one pin location in the universal control boxes but you pretty much have to have the install manual and follow it to be safe. I will not attempt to tell someone how to hook it up on here...

    Outboard motor controls- compatibility

Depends on the control manufacturer. The issues mainly are push or pull to fwd gear and push or pull to advance throttle? Engine manufacturers are different in that regard. Some control manufacturers are generic and will accept both. You will have to do your own research on this one.

    Paint Friendly Degreaser

The nice thing about WD-40 is that it easily removes 60-70 year old caked on and dried up grease pretty easily and never touches the paint. A lot of us that do antique and vintage outboard work and restorations use it .....a Lot!

    Paint Friendly Degreaser

WD-40 is about as friendly to paint as it gets. I degrease all of my vintage engines with this and it preserves the paint perfectly every time.

1966 Sea King 3.5 hp parts

Go to www.aomci.org and to the ask a member section or to the classifieds there. Aomci is the antique outboard group, Bet there is a FB group for Sea Kings as well. What is wrong with the one on there right now?

    Form a gasket

I do not see a gasket being called for there. That is the case in a lot of later engines. No need for one once the pump has primed. Up to you as it certainly will not hurt anything.

    Evinrude 9.9 - Quiet Runner?

Easier with the flywheel off but knock yourself out..........................

    Motor peeing question

You may have an impeller with a detached (spun) hub. Not a common issue but I have one sitting on my bench at the moment. Looks perfectly normal but if you grab the impeller blades from both sides and try and bend away from the hub you will find the issue if that is what it is. Second. run the...

    Form a gasket

Go to Marine engine, look up, and buy the correct gasket! No substitute for doing the job one time and doing it right.

    Evinrude 9.9 - Quiet Runner?

There should be virtually no lateral movement. That issue coupled with the broken upper mount would put that engine into a spare parts engine to me. They were not OMC's best effort compared to 1977 and later 9.9-15hp engines.

Can you be more specific about what engine you are working on?

    Seaking 3.5 hp

There should be a couple of clamp screws that are below the powerhead that control steering friction. This is based on the Johnson/Evinrude equivalent to this engine. They are very simple so do not be afraid to loosen and re tighten screws.. Other than that there should be probably two bushings...

    Evinrude 9.9 - Quiet Runner?

Okay thanks. 1974-1976 9.9-15hp engines had a myriad of issues that resulted in several service bulletins. Most of which were aimed at the ignition side of things. On your particular system there was an ignition stabilization kit that has long since been discontinued and NLA that stabilized the...

New 9.9 setup - is this enough?

Again, not true. This should be simple. If you have a 6' wide bottom on a boat and one is flat and one is a vee hull which one has more square inches of surface area? Surface area is drag, period. Vee hulls alone have very little inherent lift unless lift strakes are added (that is another...
