Go on to Ebay and find an OEM manual. Well worth it.

    Water in lower unit?

First off don't jump to conclusions that the propshaft seal failed. Do check it by removing the prop and do a visual check. Second - Are your fill and drain plugs sporting a reddish colored sealing washer? If so those were changed several years back to a newer black one that needs to be changed...

    Evinrude 9.9 - Quiet Runner?

Always helps to know the model year of an engine you are looking for help on.

New 9.9 setup - is this enough?

UH.......no. Flat bottom will always displace less water than a vee bottom and will plane far easier due to the fact that it is flat! Where are your batteries? If they are all in the stern that can be a big issue. You have to spread weight around. The less horsepower you have the more critical...

72 johnson 20hp broke on me need help please....

One of the biggest issues with Sierra parts is that in too many cases ..... they don't fit. Whenever possible use OEM parts. Also, the most likely culprit in your gearcase will be the shift rod Oring......make absolutely sure you change it.

    Rotational slop on flywheel

Stop before you even think about checking the flywheel key. Yes, at the outer edge of the flywheel there will be some slop. Perfectly normal. No, it will not be slop between the crankshaft and driveshaft splines.

    1989(?) Johnson 25 (J25TECEM) Starting issues

Okay. Did you do what I asked to verify it is pumping? If not that is square one to start. Check that first. At idle your plugs will remain black in color. Not a good indication of proper fuel/air mixture. Not a 4-stroke. After you check the pump for pumping capability I want you to pull the...

    89 evinrude

Almost all powerhead and wiring can be changed over. Differences will be electric start, etc. Mechanically most parts will change as well. Carbs, intakes will be different, etc. Thru-hub exhaust stuff will not change over to non. Props between the two will not change.

Thank you for your honest reply. The manual primer is just that. Manual. In order for it to function is has to be pumped in and out 2-3 times. You should feel fuel in it. By just pulling it open you are probably barely filling the chamber in it with fuel. Now....on the output side of the primer...

On that engine you have a manual primer system, no choke. Are you using it? If you are then tell me your procedure for starting using the primer. Also welcome to Tin boats and the engine side of things!

First boat looking for some speed

RPM range for that engine is 4500-5500

Looking for this piece and or name

Leave it as designed. Once you have done this job and are familiar it will be easy next time. The reason you do not want to do what you suggested is that the shift rod height is incredibly critical to gear life and proper gear engagement when shifting. This is, if nothing else, a safety warning!!

Not sure how much help I have been on this Karla but one thing is for sure. You never gave up and that is well worth us trying to help you.

First boat looking for some speed

How are you measuring speed? Remove that propeller and see if there is a Dia/Pitch printed below the prop nut somewhere. Give that to us. We NEED to cover basics before recommending changes. As has been suggested you will also need a tachometer if you are really serious about this.

First boat looking for some speed

There is quite a large thread on this subject in this forum you can find and peruse. Has all the information you may need.

    Won't go on plane

Push the throttle all the way forward to plane the boat off then reduce throttle to a desired cruise speed. Shift weight around in the boat to help you plane the boat. No boat stays the same when transferred to a new owner. Weight and weight placement always gets shifted. Let's try this before...

On that design gearcase you definitely have to replace the shift shaft Oring while in there. What did you decide to do on gears?

Try it again. That square looking part at the base of the throttle handle. Grab that part and see if you can move it out and away from the housing and advance the throttle. OR......possible that there (was) a button there at one time that could be pushed to allow you to advance the throttle...
