That was the way my Evinrude 9.9 worked when I got it. There is a modification you can do to get a telltale stream from it. I did it to mine and it worked perfectly. I have included one link to a video on how to do it.

Nice little boat. When I was growing up we had a Sears Elgin boat just like that with a 7.5 Elgin motor on it. It was a pretty stable boat for its size.

I do not know about fish finders spooking fish, but in my experience, my boat spooked fish. I have a canoe and had a boat at one time. Out in my canoe I would see fish swimming around pretty close to the canoe which they would not do when I was in my boat even when anchored.

Reminds me of my stint as a yacht mechanic. You would go into their boat/home and go down into a hole in the floor in their kitchen or living room to get to the engine room.
