    10 HP restriction lakes?

The Supreme Court has held that Conservation Officers can search properties without a warrant looking for violations of game laws. That's why they can demand to search freezers and coolers with no warrant and can enter dwellings to conduct those searches. Some states have restricted that...

Buy a new motor for old boat, or buy used boat and motor to replace.

It's sounds as if you and I are similar: We'd rather be fishing than working on boats and outboards. Assumption: You are confident that your current boat is in good shape and there are no hidden or emerging issues. If it was me, and if the boat was in good condition and met my needs, I'd opt...

    Towing with Smaller SUV

I think you're fine with the Pilot and your boat. The limiting factor was seating for 8, so I'm with airshot. I was shocked to find out that the Pilot has a configuration that will seat 8.

What have you been up to lately?

I understood the conversation as it developed. It's all good. One of my original thoughts when I first got my boat was that there might be times when more than just the two fishermen would be on the trip. I might have to make two trips to carry more people and stuff to a picnic site, or...

Trailer mods and a couple of questions

A couple of questions regarding placement of your winch post. 1. What do you pull the trailer with? If it's a P/U truck, can you lower the tailgate, or is the winch post in the way? If it's an SUV, can you raise the liftgate? 2. Does tailgate/liftgate operation require the trailer and...

It's time.. Finally starting my 77 14' Seafarer build/ rebuild.

Good; anxious to hear the result. If you decide to try the polycarbide abrasive wheel again, look to get this one at Harbor Freight: It's designed for use in an angle grinder. The entire hull of my boat consumed two wheels.

Want to buy a boat but worried

I read it twice, too, and still don't think I "got it."

What have you been up to lately?

My wife has mentioned, now for the second time, that if we're going to stay in the current acreage, we need to seriously consider a utility tractor with a front loader bucket. The motivation for the latest mention was removal of snow drifts from the driveway. If we did that, I would sell the...

It's time.. Finally starting my 77 14' Seafarer build/ rebuild.

I have not used the Nyalox wheels. 80 grit seems aggressive, based on how I would expect it to perform on wood. Think I'd try 120 first. Even at that, I'd be gentle to start to see how it impacts the surrounding aluminum. I'm interested in hearing about longevity of those of those abrasives...

    New outboard battery

I have a 2021 Merc 20 HP electric start. Very similar to yours, if not exactly the same mechanically. I have a Group 24 AGM battery; bought it at a local home improvement big box store. The battery has been service for three years now and is doing great. Not knowing better at the time, I...

    Starter Battery

I'd use that battery in a heartbeat. Put it in a box, secure it, and away you go. The only thing that might give me pause is the physical size and weight of the battery. What group is it? But if it fits.... The issue about deep cycle is about how it discharges and how battery life might be...

Paint advice. Help me put lipstick on this pig!

Well, there you go! That's why I qualified my input. It's counterintuitive, though.

Paint advice. Help me put lipstick on this pig!

The "long view" is a good path to what you seek. It was 3 1/2 years between those pictures. One step at a time. Do what you can when you can. For me, the important part was keeping the boat fishable as I made improvements as I could afford them, either in cost or time. One of my first steps...

    Starter Battery

I did the same when I first got my boat. It's been three full seasons. I store the battery inside the shop in the winter and recharge when on the boat as it is hooked to my two bank onboard charger. No issue to date. In my view, only worry about it if you run into problems with that battery.

Newb to boats 14 ft aluminim?

If it checks good on the motor mechanically, then based on what you describe, and your intended use, I say go for it. Sounds like a good starter boat. I think the DF4A is a four stroke motor; no need for mixed gas. Yes, I would carry a small can of gas for reserve; 1 gallon would be more than...

Paint advice. Help me put lipstick on this pig!

I'm no expert, but I painted my boat, and am satisfied with how it turned out. Before and after pics: The day I brought it home in 2020: After pulling it out of the shop a few weeks ago. Paint: The red is Krylon Farm and Implement Paint, Massey Ferguson Red color. The black is...

Looking out the front door this morning...

My truck is a 2015 Toyota Tundra. It's pictured in my thread about my boat trailer over on the page. It's the second Tundra I've had. The first was a 2000 Tundra. I loved the 2000. I thought then, and still do, that it beats any of the newer Tundras for looks. In fact, I think most pickup...

Looking out the front door this morning...

Not really hard to guess why the schools all close at the hint of a couple inches of snow, even here in Iowa. All it takes is one driver going too fast and hit one of those school buses and the personal injury lawyers will be booking clients for lawsuits against the school district.
