    $1000 Question - Helix 9 vs Helix 7

Good lookin' boat! Hope you enjoy that Helix 9. Like you, I need bigger screens these days. Before I got the Helix 7 in February, I had a tiny Lowrance that was not at all bright in the sunlight. It was very limited and I primarily used it for water temp and depth readings.

    $1000 Question - Helix 9 vs Helix 7

I have the 7 G3N, never had a 9 G4N. I think you answered your own question with the SI/DI usage comment, particularly when you combine it with your other comment about having a hard time justifying the purchase. If it was me, I'd save the pesos and get the 7 G3N. Might even look at buying...

Lowe 1448 did i pay too much?

Life is too short to be second guessing a done deal, so stop looking at ads for what you already have. Get out there and enjoy that boat!

Trailer mods and a couple of questions

Thanks to all for the inputs so far. Right now I'm mulling the general bunk mounting concept. My intention is to add one cross member to the frame from side to side and fab the vertical supports from steel I already have on hand. I'll have the boat on the trailer braced in position so that...

    Scored a Lowe 1648

Fun! Congrats on finding that deal. What kind of stuff might be done?

Trailer mods and a couple of questions

I'm in the process of modifying the trailer that carries my 14' Lund tinnie. The trailer is structurally sound, but was not original with the boat. The trailer is (or actually was), too short for this boat. I don't know who paired the trailer with the boat; that was done at least two owners...

    Transducer kicking up spray

My first thought is the same as LDUBS. My Humminbird also came with a plug to fill the gap between the mount and the transducer. I had the same issue with a different portable transducer mount this past season. The gap between mount and transducer directed water flow up and even over the...

    Transom Plugs

I have both; I only use the one on the left. It's attached by a chain to a bulkhead right next to the drain hole.

NOCO Battery Jump Starter - Any Good?

I went with THIS ONE. To be clear, I did NOT buy the jump pack for my boat. I bought it to carry in the car. My 2021 Merc 20HP is electric start with rope backup. The battery can be totally dead and the pull start will still work; Mercury calls it their "battery free EFI" and it's called out...

NOCO Battery Jump Starter - Any Good?

I bought a NOCO jump pack just the other day. Received it yesterday, and I've only charged it, and not used it for "real." The NOCO isn't the cheapest, but I bought it because of the quality of the NOCO onboard charger on my boat. During our recent driving trip to/from Alaska, a jump pack I...

    Inflatable Life Jacket Storage

I've tried looking for that "must be worn to be counted as a PFD" requirement in the Iowa regs, but I haven't found it. I still wear mine all the time. I also wore my traditional PFD all the time; I eventually went to the auto-inflatable because it's much cooler and more comfortable.

Why the lake doesn't give people back

Reinventing the mousetrap? No. Auto-inflatables are a different style of PFD for those who don't like the "traditional" vest. OBTW: Mousetraps were "reinvented," thankfully. On my rural acreage, traditional mousetraps failed more than 50% of the time. A more modern style works for me well...

    Used outboards

Used motors that are truly "ready to go" will command high prices. When it comes to used, the real saavings come from a unit that is easily fixed. The more you can diagnose and fix on your own, the better price you can probably drive. I'm not that outboard guy who can fix it all. I lost a...

    Transducer separation from prop wash

I've now been using the Helix 7 since April. When all was said and done, I ended up mounting the H7's transducer on the already installed mounting plate that is shown in the picture early on in this thread. I had to give up on meeting H'bird's recommended spacing as that's just not possible on...

    Battery Terminals

I was thinking something like this: battery clamps Or even these: Battery terminal clamp

    Battery Terminals

If you're just looking for an "emergency" hookup for a bilge pump only when you need it, then maybe you should outfit the bilge pump wires with battery clamps that you can attach to the battery terminal when needed.

    Hopeful for advice

I have a 14' Lund; it's the one pictured in my profile. Two guys can fish it, easily, as long as neither needs a lot of room to spread out. It is spec'd for 4 persons, but in reality, there's no way I'd do that. Little kids count the same as adults in the "max persons" spec. In your...

    Down the Humminbird Aby$$

I have a ProNav Marine system attached to a MK Powerdrive. There's a bit of learning curve with the Anchor feature on that unit, too. I always try to have the boat nearly stopped and with the bow facing into the wind when I hit the button. Once set, I still have to keep an eye on that cord to...

Need Lots of Help No idea where to start.

My suggestion: Get good at the search function on the forum. Every item you listed has been discussed on the forum within the past three months. I'm not trying to discourage you from posting questions, but using the search function will likely get you an answer much quicker than posting...

    Seeking Anchor Recommendations

I don't often use an anchor; mine always seems to sink into the bottom and is very hard to pull up. I use my spot lock for station keeping. There is a YouTube channel by a guy who does lots of boating/fishing DIY stuff. He's done several anchors. This LINK will take you to the list of anchor...
