What to watch out for: 1990(ish) 15hp Johnson

I'm in a holding pattern right now until my parts arrive. I ordered a carb rebuild kit, impeller, and new plugs from Marineengine.com. ETA is this Saturday. Fuel tank and line are coming next Tuesday. I went with one of the Vevor 3g tank/line combo's. I've had good luck with other stuff from...

    1973 16’ Monark repair/rebuild

Figured I’d compile all of this into one thread. I’m replacing the transom and doing a tune up on an ‘88 15hp Johnson. Boat is in pretty rough shape overall but has some good bones and is water tight except for a slow leak from the drain hole. I’m not entirely sure that the leak wasn’t caused by...

What to watch out for: 1990(ish) 15hp Johnson

I pulled fluid from the drain hole and it was a pretty shade of black with no signs of the forbidden chocolate milkshake or off smells (not that gear oil smells all that good to start with). Feels good to check that one off the list. 80w90 Marine grade oil to refill it with after I change the...

    Jonboat Project

Something to keep in mind while looking at FF and spot lock: Spot Lock works best with a Humminbird FF. IIRC, with a Humminbird, it keeps you in a 2-3ft circle; without is something like a 6ft circle. Doesn't sound like much of a difference until you are anchored up next to a bridge pylon in...

    Pappaw’s 1965 Rich Line

Talk about a glow up! It'd look better in chevy orange, but other than that, fantastic job!

Tornado this spring got my10ft baby, any helpful hints for straightening this mess out?

Is the hull still in one piece? It looks like it has a pretty significant tear in a couple of the pictures

    1973 Monark transom/stress crack repair

I don't know why I didn't think of a separation layer. I work in commercial roofing and we put one down all the time when overlaying an existing roof. I wonder if Penetrox or a Dielectric grease would do the same thing, or at least close enough for this purpose. A quick google search says "it...

    1973 Monark transom/stress crack repair

I was thinking angle iron because it is cheap and stronger than aluminum of a similar size. The plan for this boat was to do it quick and cheap, use it for a couple of years, and then trade up. Jokes on me though. I’m not one to do something that I know is going to cause problems for someone...

What to watch out for: 1990(ish) 15hp Johnson

Thank you for the reminder pappy. I have a horrible track record when it comes to buying used. Boatyard’s post had me half convinced that I had done it again.

What to watch out for: 1990(ish) 15hp Johnson

Any way to check for that without having to totally strip the motor?

    1973 Monark transom/stress crack repair

The outside is bare aluminum, no wood. It's going to be a hot minute before I get around to pulling the wood out. I need to get the motor working and get siding on a shed before I start on this project. The list of "quick and easy" fixes that aren't going to be nearly as quick and easy are...

    1973 Monark transom/stress crack repair

It stops about 1/2" above the floor. Looking at the picture of the drain hole, I'd be willing to bet a significant sum that the current transom is a replacement. The cut out for the drain hole does not line up well with the hole.

    1973 Monark transom/stress crack repair

Does the stainless not corrode the aluminum? the original plan was to just use a piece of angle iron but I've been told that, that would eat away the aluminum. Whatever I do, I'm going to secure it through the top of the transom, not the cap. I will get more support that way, and sealing it up...

What to watch out for: 1990(ish) 15hp Johnson

The gauge stopped moving at around 60lbs after the third stroke. I pulled it a couple more times after the gauge stopped to confirm that, that was all I was getting. I haven't had time to play with it much since I picked it up on Saturday. At this point, I'm really hoping I didn't wind up with a...

What to watch out for: 1990(ish) 15hp Johnson

As cheap and easy as it is to rebuild these carbs, I'm just going to rebuild it since I have to take it most of the way apart to clean it anyway. Thank you for the tip. I'll do that as soon as I get the fuel tank and line. Could bad gas have been causing the rattle? I know it can cause knock in...

What to watch out for: 1990(ish) 15hp Johnson

Fuel line was surprisingly still very pliable and not hard or crumbly. Based on how the carb looked once I got it off, I suspect it had a rebuild shortly before getting taken out of service. I ordered a rebuild kit anyway. I’m going to have to take it most of the way apart to clean it. Figured I...

What to watch out for: 1990(ish) 15hp Johnson

I order all of the parts from marineparts. The prices are comparable to Amazon and I know that I’m getting OEM parts. Edit: I just figured out that I was supposed to do the compression test when the motor was warmed up. I did it cold which I think would account for the low compression. 2nd...

    1973 Monark transom/stress crack repair

I did a float test with a 3.5 hp motor while deciding if it was worth moving forward on. It has an extremely slow leak from the drain hole but is otherwise water tight. The drain hole is mushroomed on the inside and slightly out of round on the outside. The drain plug was in pretty rough shape...

Website issues tinboat.net on Galaxy Tab S8+

I'm having the similar issues on an iPhone 13. Typing is significantly delayed, there is a pop-up that hangs out next to the file attachment button, and the page will randomly refresh in the middle of typing. No issues on desktop either.
