    Bunk placement

My thinking is that either the bunks or at least the rear keel-roller should support the underside of the transom. At least that's how I've set up the boats I've owned...including the newest one.

    Bear trailer issue

Exactly...raising the hitch will make the ball/coupler connection 'off center'. More centered the connection, the less chance of it jumping off due to an incomplete closure of the latch.

Where to find corner caps for tin boats?

I gave up looking for one for my '72 Alumacraft. I'm just gonna bend some 1/8" Aluminum to replace mine...want a flat surface anyway without the cast-in carry handles.

    1972 Alumacraft F-9 - Trailer rebuild

Trailer is done - boat is now on it and in the garage. Things to do around the house tomorrow, so it'll be Monday probably before I start on the boat itself. Short vid showing off my work. Trailer overview

    Bear trailer issue

That's probably the issue - unless it's a lock-nut or at least has a lock washer, the vibration of carting it down the road will loosen the nut and could possibly cause you to lose the trailer on a bump. Just go with a lock-nut...solves a lot of the issues. Note: While the boat I picked up had...

    Bear trailer issue

Probably couldn't hurt - usually includes instruction on how to set it properly too...tight enough to hold, loose enough that the ball can swivel in the coupler for turns.

    Bear trailer issue

Okay - well until the latch is closed and properly set, a 2" ball in a 2" coupler will feel loose. If the nut won't tighten to the point that the coupler can still come off the ball - need to replace the coupler-mechanism...not the whole coupler - you can get a coupler repair kit for about $12...

    Bear trailer issue

Could the coupler be for a 2-5/16 ball? That's the next size up.

    Bear trailer issue

Mine has a flat and lock washer between the spring and the nut. Different styles - I think newer trailers have all gone to a lock-nut, but mine is an early 70s model.

    Bear trailer issue

That's exactly the problem With the nut loose, the lip that presses against the ball when you close the latch isn't tight to the ball. You need to put the trailer on the hitch, close the latch, then tighten that nut until the lip is just snug to the ball...not cranked down hard. If the nut is...

    1972 Alumacraft F-9 - Trailer rebuild

Getting close to the end of this part. Bunks, winch stand and tongue jack mounted. Carpet the bunks, mount the winch and bow stop, wire the lights...and it's done. This is what I started with.

    Gasoline Prices

Don't whine too much - we could be paying what my sister-in-law pays. She lives in Kensington, London, England...US equivalent is $7.05 a gallon. We got pretty cheap gas here in the US compared to other countries...just we've been 'spoiled' by all the years of very cheap gas.

Re-assembly has begun - big task is to mount the bunks, then remove them with the brackets attached so I can lay on the carpet.

    Attaching Cleats

If you want to 'glue' the cleats on...scrap off the paint in the exact shape/size of the cleat base and use JB Weld. They'll have to be ground off after that.

And new plastics - I worked in IT at Cargill Headquarters...while I was there, Cargill Research Division in cooperation with DOW Chemical developed a plastic that uses the remains of corn-milling...stuff they use to throw away. It's the basis for that biodegradable plastic that's starting to...

    Gasoline Prices

A lot of prices depend on what part of the country you're in. My local station has regular (10% ethanol) for $3.099 Ethanol free is $3.249 The local airport runs $4.99 to $5.60 for Av-Gas depending on the grade.

    Drainage

Watching this as I'd have the same issue with my '72 Alumacraft that I'll be putting a floor into.

So U-Bolt with frame strap would be the ticket? I kind of like the side-to-side adjustment potential. With only that thin joiner between the two slots, does the U-Bolt hold it securely?
