    Another Surf Fishing Trip

Thanks for teh report. Absolutely nothing wrong with the older gear. In their day the Garcia Cnolon's were the T-Rex of surf rods! And they still work!

    Kicker motor

I use a 9.9 or a 6 on my Starcraft MR180 which I think is the same basic hull as your 180ss. The 6 is perfect for trolling on calm lakes. The 9.9 is a LOT more authoritative on big water and in wind. And if you have it tuned to just turn over is great for trolling.

    vacation

Well guys, I was planning on a trip to Alaska (from Georgia) late this summer. The plan was to cartop a tinny. It also meant driving through Canada (I really wanted to see Alberta and BC, and maybe the YT) but things happen, and now I'm thinking that I gotta look for an alternative. Aww shucks.

Any easy way to slow down trolling motor?

You could also tie a small bucket on a rope and let it follow behind the boat as you go. The bigger the bucket, the slower the boat.

Help hole in boat how would u fix

Nah it was just sitting in a barn for some years - my grandpa's boat I inherited. I can post some pics of the finished repair if anyone wants. Blends right in if you aren't really looking.

Help hole in boat how would u fix

I had a couple holes in an older boat that were likely "kinetically generated" (i.e. bulletholes). I just patched them with closed end rivets and aluminum washers, greased generously with 5200. Works just fine.

    Tail walking tinny. Yikes.

Those Australians do some crazy racing with their tinny's, look them up on you tube. The standard fare seems to be something about 12' long or so, with about a 25HP souped up motor. They ride two in the boat with one person on the tiller and one person toward the front, both of them leaning...

Mercury 50 ELPT - .....power tilt?

I have now learned that this motor has a trim AND tilt. Thought I'd share!

While looking for an Evinrude part on Ebay....

I tend to think of most Chinese products as one time use, at best. If you can get it to last longer good on you. I prefer American made, to the point of preferring US (well) used over new Chinese. Buy once cry once, as they say.

Mercury 50 ELPT - .....power tilt?

Looking at a new Mercury 50 ELPT. I believe PT stands for Power Trim, which allows one to vary the angle of the motor in the water while underway. In days of old if it had power trim and tilt the acronym would have been PTT I'm interested in a power TILT functionality such as the situation...

Value of 3 gal double line Johnson/Evinrude pressue tank

Gents: What would you put the as a value on a 3 gal double line Johnson/Evinrude pressue tank? Came off a mid 50's Johnson. A few datails: 1) just a little rust outside. Its been coated with some kind of off-white coating which has helped keep the rust at bay, but that will be stripped...

    old trucks for towing

I agree that the longer wheelbase tows better. My main tow rig is a full size surburban, and it does a WAY better job than anything smaller or shorter. And has a brake controller for the bigger stuff. For towing most tinnies though, a person doesn't need much.....

    old trucks for towing

My oldest is an 84, and I get "thats a cool truck!" comments all the time, the last one yesterday afternoon. Tows the snot out of anything I have.

    FRP over foam floor

Hmmmm. The power of this board to generate ideas!!!! Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I wonder how FRP would do to cover a "soft" plywood floor so that a person could have a restored floor without having to do the complete gutting and replacement of the plywood.....

    Anyone try Flex Seal?

I just has to redo an area of surrounding two holes that was patched by that stuff. Took a lot of time and energy (plus chemicals and power tools!). The two 1/2 inch holes were then fixed with two closed end rivets with a washer backing, seated in 5200.. The patch is unobtrusive and permanent.

Securing plywood decking to aluminum framing

What Jethro said. And just for the task I plan to use a pneumatic riveter as the handheld ones get tiring fast! Haven't decided yet on whether to dip them in a sealant like 5200 before inserting, to retain the integrity of the plywood (which has been coated with old timer's formula on the outside)

    Johnson 2 Stroke Leaking Oil?

Switching to synthetic oil seems to help with both blue smoke and discharge. I use the OMC variety. Might give iit a try.

How much foam do I need in my boat?

Realization: 28 noodles=only 400 lbs flotation? A person would need twice that, or more, to keep a 15' Starcraft afloat. 430 lbs for hull, 120 lbs for motor, and, say 300 lbs for battery, trolling motor, gas tank, seats, tackle boxes, misc. important stuff. One wave and its Davey Jones'...

How much foam do I need in my boat?

Well, pool noodles were on closeout at my local Wal Mart a couple weeks ago for 52 cents a noodle. Using finger digit quantum physics, with respect to my 16' starcraft, and err... hull curvature and all that, I calculated 25 noodles, but bought 30 anyway out of an abundance of caution. So...
