    "Reliable" Axles.....NOT!!!

I've only built one homemade trailer axle and it was for a boat. I basically bought 2" heavy wall steel square tubing and lap welded 3500lb. spindles on the ends. The spindles ride on top of the axle so the bottom of the boat trailer is closer to the ground. I poured about a quart of used...

    Optima Batteries

For anyone considering an Optima marine battery, give Sears Diehard Platinum Marine batteries a consideration. They are AGM batteries inside a traditonal box carrier, no spirals just a box. Sometimes Sears will run a sale with $$$ off any Diehard battery. Also, they are made by Odyssey, so you...

    Boat painting

I sprayed my Alweld with the aluminum boat green paint using a Harbor Freight siphon spraygun and 30 gallon Home Depot compressor. No regulator and no water removing agents were used either, unless a handheld kink in the hose was a "regulator." I think it came out looking great. I wire wheeled...

    Removing wax.

I have used Dawn dish detergent soap for years to remove grease and waxy residue from anything marine/automotive I want "squeaky" clean. It's also good at cleaning up drips from oil changes as well. As an old hot rodding tip, I've also made my own wipe down cleaner using 50/50 acetone and...

    Speedi-Sleeves

Dang that's a LOT of money. Speedi Sleeve is a highly precision part that it is held to very close dimensional tolerances and surface finishes of the original mating surface. If the spindle isn't sealing right, I would forego the sleave route and purchase new spindles and have them welded...

how do I know what bearings to get?

Like others have said, the easiest way to get replacements is to ID the part numbers on the bearings (the parts with the cylinders), races (also called cups), and seals. Part numbers will either be stamped or etched on the outside circumference of the bearings/races. Always replace bearings and...

Im a NEWBE! Welded vs. rivieted

I tooled around in my dad's old riveted Monark for years. Last year, I bought a used Alweld. It was a night and day difference regarding rigidity and overall ride. Sure, my Alweld weighs more than a similar size riveted boat and my motor has to grunt a little more, but I'll take the added...

    Here's my trailer project

Usually, you want a high solids oil based paint. A lot of folks have used Rustoleum paints to prime and coat their trailers. I've painted numerous metals (trailers, winch bumpers, lamp poles, birdbaths, etc.) with Rustoleum and had good results. My winch bumper started chalking up after a...

Paint for Trailer: Layer 2 Electric Booglo

I've also used Sherwin Williams KEM-400 acrylic enamel and KEM Kromic metal primer to paint various things. It's an outstanding paint that's a tested and proven industrial coating. I'm in the process of extending the tongue on my jon boat trailer and am using these paints. My only bellyache...

What do you all use for grommets?

If its where someone can see it, I use actual grommets. But if its under deck or out of sight, I've used appropriate diameter rubber fuel hose split lengthwise. The fuel hose trick works especially well on multiple wires and in bends around objects.

    Vulkem 116

I've used Vulkem to seal cracks in concrete, the gap between swimming pool decks and bull nose edging (pull up the foam spacer), house siding, showers, windows, and peeling soles on tennis shoes. It's good stuff. I think it is a polyurethane sealant as opposed to a "caulk." The key is to use...

    Transom Wheels

Have seen plenty of the channels on boat transoms, but never the actual pedestals/wheels. Are they about the length and size of a tongue jack? Do they lock in place with a bolt/pin?

    270Handiman's 1649 Custom Flat Project

So what's the new project? You spent a LOT of time, effort, money, and "married man vouchers" on that Custom boat (I'm hitched myself and have been working on my Alweld), so your new project must be another exciting one at that.

Look what I found for $1500

Very nice boat you scored there! I bet for another $1000 you could outfit that tin to rival the latest tinny Tritons etc. Especially, with a 4 stroke Honda quietly propelling it. If I saw that listing on the Memphis CList, I would think it was some kind of scam to capture email addresses and...

    Perforated Aluminum Floor

I have seen perforated stainless steel sheets discarded from a local meat packing plant used as Al boat floors. The worker I spoke with said he could use thinner sheets than Al because the SS sheets are stiffer. But I have no idea how much more SS sheets are compared to Al sheets.

    Is this a Tinboats member??

The article recommends using pressure treated wood and doesn't mention (from the picture page at least) using stainless steel screws when securing anything to the boat's aluminum. Wish we could see the entire article though.

Barge Strikes Bridge and Collapses Part in Kentucky.

It looks like the captain put it between the wrong uprights. :LOL2: Should've moved one or two clearings over. Too bad for the people who use that bridge daily.

    Galvanic corrosion destroys multi-million $$ U S Navy ship.

Yep. They were "deleted." I'll bet this is one of those "it looks good on the budget paper" items that didn't have any final approval from maritime engineers.
