    1648 alumacraft square nose mods

That's some awesome ingeniuty right there. I can only wish to find enough free flooring for 3 boats. Heck just enough for one boat would be great.

    when to rebuild the transom

When your engine motor mounts (bolts or hand screws) draw into the aluminum and cause dents in them, I'd say it's time to replace the transom material. When the aluminum deforms, then it's a sign the wood behind it is compressing and can no longer adequately dissipate stresses of power over...

    Your bottom feeder status??

I'm definitely resourceful. I was driving down the road a couple of months ago and found a brand new, still in the wrap, roll of Dupont pink panther insulation that had blown out the back of a truck. I took it to Home Depot and got a $14 credit that I promptly used to buy some primer and...

1987 Bass Tracker V16 SC Guide Special Rebuild

Looks you may have lucked out. I know a lot of Tracker owners have had to completely gut the poured in foam due to contamination and water logging. Looks liker your transom replacement shouldn't be too difficult.

Parker Duck boat paint, too dark?

You could let the sun oxidize it for a while. :D FYI, the Duralux "aluminum boat green" doesn't really have a "green" look to it. It reminds me more of a dark olive drab used by USAAC bombers in WWII.

    Remove old carpet

Best thing I found to remove stubborn carpet glue from my Alweld was a 4-1/2" grinder and a Dewalt knotted steel wire wheel. The previous owner glued a hideous yellow/brown Astroturf to the benches and sides. I used the Dewalt knotted steel wire cup at first, but found that it just swirled...

    Frozen transom mount bolts :-(

PB Blaster is good stuff for rusty bolts, but I really think Kroil is superior. I have used Kroil (Orange/Black can) to ease rusted lug nuts, u-joint nuts, and even exhaust manifold bolts loose. I think Kroil not only help lubricate things, it actually dissolves rust too.

    40HP too much?

If your boat is in solid, structurally sound condition, I would think 40hp would be fine. My 1652 Alweld runs an old 30hp Mariner, but its welded. Sometimes, I wish I had 40hp. As for Misty River, I want to say that Misty River bought Discovery Boats sometime back in the 1990s. Discovery...

    Emergency Oar/Paddle for 14' deep-V?

As for sculling, just ask anyone who grew up fishing in the 1940s'50s or pre-trolling motor days. My dad is in his late 60s and remembers being the "sculler" i.e. trolling motor, for his dad and uncle. Those were the days when working class men built their fishing boats from thick cypress...

    ALWELD boats

I have an older model 1652 Alweld flatbottom that is built very, very strong. The welds are very uniform and overlap nicely. I'm glad I held out for a welded jon I could afford. However, I takes a whole heck of a lot of umph for me to move it around by myself when it's off the trailer (for...

    '89 Fisher Marine Transformation

Man that's a real slick boat you have there. Any particular place where you got those rolls of aqua carpet?

    My New 1987 Alweld

I believe Alwelds are still made in Longsdale, AR boat 2-1/2 hours west of Memphis, TN. Any updates on your fixer upper?

    boat braceing

I'm betting the contoured shape of your v-hull would be more accepting of a bench removal than a slab sided flat bottom. I think a flat boatside would absorb more energy than a rounded one. As for removing the middle bench, I guess you could monitor it for stress.

    Will a 9.9 get a 1648 up on plane?

There's one way to find out. :D What pitch and blade style (2/3/4 blade) does your Mercury have installed?

    painting/hardner

If you are going to use Rustoleum, be aware that Rustoleum can sometimes fade and "chalk" when exposed to prolong sunlight. I remember painting my winch bumper and rear bumper satin black to match, and a year later repainted them both because they faded to a dark gray. I used some Tractor...

    Stretching out a trailer?

Just google your town/city and "fabrication supply" "metal supply" "steel supply" etc.

Will a 15 hp be all that much better than my 9.9 hp?

I'm pretty sure my 1981 Johnson 15HP has the same powerhead as my dad's 1983 Johnson 9.9HP. The main difference being the carburetor size. As a matter of fact, I think there are a few threads on here where people just swapped carbs to upgrade from 9.9HP to 15HP. As for the power difference...
