Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

Been looking into it all day and all I've really managed to find out is that I need to take apart the lower because apparently that rod isn't supposed to come out haha. The manual didn't have anything about it either - instructions to remove the lower from the upper and removing the prop are...

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

Not sure, don't think so. The lower is still in FWD gear same as the upper. I've tried somewhat firmly (not hard!) pushing the cam in various places trying to find where it goes. Been searching online all day for videos or a write-up.... anything that tells me how to get that cam set up in...

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

You have a good day on the lake, man! Appreciate all the help. It's always frustrating learning new things, especially when they're as complicated as this. The thing on the end of my shift rod is my cam. So I need to figure out how to get that put in now. Looks like I turned something...

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

Here's a view straight down into the shaft. This whole time my shift rod was just banging the top of them and flexing when the motor tried to push it down. Any ideas where it needs to be going? Pretty sure she's a two stroke at this point. Don't even see any 4-stroke 6hp models from 1996...

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

Can't possibly be left to right after inspecting my shaft. The part that actually does the shifting is a screw on part, any left to right movement loosens/tightens it up.

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

The problem was that I accidentally took it apart initially looking for the impeller! I thought it'd be under the plastic housing... nope. So I pulled the shaft out of the gear case/cam/whatever its called when replacing the impeller. Now I just need to get it back in properly.

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

Mine moves up and down, I'm all but sure about that. Watched all of the movement before disassembling so I could be sure to put everything back together right. There is a rubber knob on the shaft I had to remove that changes gear on the engine vertically. I went ahead and drained the oil...

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

Shouldn't I be able to shift the lower unit by pushing the bar up and down, tho? I'm not able to do that. Tried to get it in neutral and re-install with motor in netural as well. I can re-assemble with motor and lower both in forward gear (only way the rod lines up in the engine), no...

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

To clarify, the motor was in F when I dropped the unit. Prop ticks when turned clockwise and has resistance when turned counterclockwise. As it should. I just pulled the lower out again and the bar is hitting something, it won't push "down" any further to put the prop in neutral. When...

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

New problem guys. Been at this one all morning. Put my impeller on (My wife actually found my retainer key! =D> ) and after putting it back together.... my throttle is all messed up. Throttle turns through all the Forward speeds, and then some. Will not go in neutral or reverse. This...

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

I know the feeling man! I got a few projects going on in there and it gets pretty bad at times. Don't think the motor is a 4 stroke any longer like the owner said....i dont see anywhere to add oil to the motor, so I assume I run 40-50:1. Can't figure out for the life of me which impeller...

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

Naw, my work area was a mess. I mean a complete disaster. Normally I wouldn't even start a project the way my workbench was looking, but I was just using my clamp to hold it upright to re-assemble. Probably better that I replace the key anyway. But I did think I saw it hit the work bench...

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

Ughhhh!!!! Lost my freakin' retaining key. I was trying to fit it in and it slipped outta my greasy fingers and I can't find it anywhere. So much for testing the motor tonight :(

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

Figured it out when reading the comments to someone's video... seen a few had screws and that was why I was stumped... no screw on mine. However, under the glob of grease is a small ridge that you can use a flat-head (or your fingernail) to pull up and pop off the key. Came right out after that!

Need some quick help accessing the impeller in Mercury 6.0

I've got a 4-stroke 1996 Mercury 6.0 that I recently acquired. It was suggested that I replace the impeller before attempting to run it, so I went out and bought a new impeller. Removed 3 bolts that allow the lower unit to come up a bit... the only thing that its catching on now, and forgive my...

    New motor, what next?

I knew I posted this thread for a reason! Will definitely order a new impeller for the motor before putting it in water. They're cheap enough on e-bay. $15-20 depending on which one I need exactly. What's the reason for swapping it out without even knowing its bad? I assume the motor...

    New motor, what next?

What's up guys just picked up my new motor that I found on a FaceBook yardsale-type page. It's a 1996 Mercury 6.0. Picked it up for $300 about an hour ago. I don't even know if it runs - I brought a barrel with me to check it out thinking we were going to his house, instead I followed him...

New guy doing a 14' smokercraft overhaul

Weight is my biggest concern right now. Not really worried about planing out since my primary fishing spot is electric-only motors, I just want a fuel outboard for some of the bigger lakes locally to get around a bit faster than my TM will push me. If it can push me 10 mph, I'll be happy with...
