    1648 question

I had a 15HP on a 1448 and it planed out just fine with three guys and gear. I also had a 1648 with a 30HP Johnson and it ran really well with three guys and gear. So a well-tuned 20 with the right prop will do just fine for you. Like was said above, you could get a LOT more speed with a...

    I NEED HELP. PLEASE

You can save a lot of wiring by using a negative bus bar in the back of the boat .... that way you only have to run one ground wire all the way up front to the battery.

    Grounding my Electrical Components.

You can get a decent quality bus bar for less than $10. Its the way to go.

    Paint

Rustoleum makes "aluminum primer" and it also makes "self etching primer". I greatly prefer the self etching primer. Unless you are wanting to do a really fancy job and get a show room finish, I'd recommend just using plain old rustoleum paint. If you clean and prep the aluminum really well...

    Noob question on seam sealing.

Like you said, first step is to get all the old wood and foam out and give the aluminum a good solid cleaning. Then look things over closely and maybe do a leak test. Replace any loose or badly leaking rivets. If you have access from the inside, Gluvit is an excellent product to seal up all...

    Flat Bottom or V bottom?

Get the V. Its a lot bigger, will be a smoother and drier boat, will be more stable (the flat bottom is really narrow), and can handle a much larger outboard. It looks like a nice boat .... keep us posted!

Trolling motor for mv 1648 ncs

Your boat doesn't sit all that high so you could most likely get away with the shorter shaft ..... but the longer one is only seven inches longer so it wouldn't make a very big difference either way.

    Seat placement

I installed two seat bases ... on in the center and one off-set for driving. I just pick the seat up and drop in the other base .... takes two seconds. I can also leave the seat off completely if I want to stand on the bench and walk back and forth while fishing.

    Newbie Question

More important than how it looks are: 1. How big is it? 2. Do you like the layout? 3. Is it a solid boat - no leaks etc? 4. Does it have the proper paperwork? 5. How is the trailer? All those things being equal, I'd definitely pay a few extra hundred bucks to get a nicer looking boat...

    Stern running light mount?

You could get a clamp on battery operated light. Or get a clamp on 12V light with wires and alligator clips to hook up to a battery in a pinch.

Tips for buying a new boat?

Best thing you can do is call a dozen different dealers and get a quote from each one .... chances are you'll find a few that are quite a bit lower than the others. Hopefully the cheaper ones will be close ... or maybe you can get the local guys to price match. Sometimes you can find killer...

Boat purchase question, need some input

As with everything boat related .... it depends. :D You are looking at a 30 year old boat with a bad motor. Old technology, old wiring, old hull, old carpet, old flooring, etc etc etc .... old isn't always bad, but the boat will most likely be a pretty big project. If you want a project...

    just wondering

A trolling motor with thrust in the high 20s or low 30s would be perfect for your boat.

    full moon+storm front+post spawn=AWESOME!!!

Man those are pretty fish ..... love the dark coloring!

    Have to say...

I agree!! The knowledge is great .... but its the friendly approach of the members that keep me coming back. It would be soooo easy to fall into the "you're doing it wrong" approach of most forums .... but on here people are supportive and encouraging.

    Fixing My Hull Issues

I like to use a rivet that is just slightly larger than the original hole .... that way I can drill out the hole to make sure its perfectly round. Removing old rivets can sometimes warp the original hole. To put in the bigger pop rivets, you'll want to get a two handled rivet gun .... its a...

    Leak from live well plug

That's great! Frankly, I think the plug that came with the boat looks fancy, but is a stupid design. What you have now will work quite well and probably cost less than 10 bucks.

    Leak from live well plug

I agree. Try an adjustable plug and see if that works.

    Fixing My Hull Issues

Leaky rivets should be replaced with closed end blind pop rivets with a dab of 3M 5500 on them. Its inexpensive, easy to do, and very effective. Leaky seems are tough. Usually, leaky rivets lead to leaky seems .... so replacing rivets might tighten up your seems. If not, you can always...

possibly dumb question about trolling motor as primary motor

You could get a used 55lb transom mount motor fairly cheap .... and then get creative and hook it up using a set of outboard steering cables. Honestly, I think it would work really well. A steering cable/ram set-up is simple and straightforward. Some basic fabrication and you could hook it...
