    1962 18hp Evinrude- please help

Whats a better result- using the ohmeter to tell you exactly when they open? Or .020 feeler gauges

    1962 18hp Evinrude- please help

I have been using the richards outboard timing tool, lining up each cylinder 'T' and 'B' between the 2x hashmarks on the side of the magneto plate. With the timing tool in the center of the hashmarks, it is supposed to bring each piston to TDC, at which point I adjust the points to .020. Maybe...

    1962 18hp Evinrude- please help

For the points- I am worried the cam lobe is worn down too much. ie, if im setting .020 at TDC, and the points dont close at base circle on cam, then the lobe is actually less than .020 tall? Whats your opinion on choke + throttle relationship for a cold start? Full choke full throttle? Or...

    1962 18hp Evinrude- please help

Sounds like my points not being closed is a big possible solution. Not sure how to to that But it doesnt solve the issue of fuel coming out the intake side when I pull start/why no fuel reaching plugs?

    1962 18hp Evinrude- please help

Thank you for responding. I can’t figure out how to get the points to be closed? I purchased the ignition kit from Marine Engine for this HP and year (came with brand new points and condensers). OEM right? I have OEM coils (4.56ohms) and brand new sierra coils (10.25ohms). Wasnt sure why the...

    1962 18hp Evinrude- no spark

Copy on 24:1 thank you I made sure the plugs were grounded to the block when i checked spark Are the points supposed to be open or closed until its time to open to .020? Can i have bad coils even if they show good continuity?

    1962 18hp Evinrude- no spark

I checked with a multimeter and I have continuity from the primary and secondary windings off the coil all the way to the center electrode of the spark plug, measures about 4.5ohms, not too bad, however it still wont produce spark! Motor wont turn over. I made it pitch black in the garage and...

points gap: .020 feeler vs ohm multimeter?

yeah i have the points tool from richardsoutboards.com. But i also saw people using the .020 feeler gauge method so if less than .020 causes a weak spark, why do people love the VOM method? I tried it and i was worried because the gap is definitely smaller than .020 using that method

points gap: .020 feeler vs ohm multimeter?

Hello there, please link the thread to this if it already exists. Regarding: 1962 evinrude 18hp fastwin points gap setting My evinrude service manual says set the gap .020 and so that .022 CANT fit. However ive seen many videos of people using the ohm setting (resistance check) on their...

1962 Evinrude 18hp Fastwin- shifter lock & fuel pump issues

Thank you for the reply. - yes made sure the fulcrum screw is in place. Like i mentioned, i can currently verify the gearcase is working properly. With the shifter lock removed- i can hand rotate the crankshaft while shifting the gears and watch the prop move into reverse, neutral, and forward -...

1962 Evinrude 18hp Fastwin- shifter lock & fuel pump issues

Good morning, I have been working on rebuilding this 62' evinrude 18hp and am running into 2 issues: 1) I finished connecting the lower unit and went to connect the shifter lock. The shifter lock F/N/R dimples wont perfectly align with each gear. Did I not properly "calibrate" the shifter lock...
