    Rock guard

If you're moving forward I think you'd hit the skid plate on the front of the skeg before you bent the bottom plate. No, I haven't used one.

    40 hp Mercury fuel problem

If it's collapsing the primer bulb, you have a clog between the primer bulb and the gas - maybe the filter on the pickup in the tank?

Max HP worth the extra $?

How far is the run to your fishing spots? Do you need to make the run at 30mph? Do boat traffic or nearby docks mean you'll be running slower? I have an 11 mile run out to the bay. Speed matters to me but it's a winding creek so I can only go so fast. In a few spots I can open the throttle...

    Just finished carpet

Looks good. I'd be afraid to use it. Will you make everyone take off their shoes?

2 stroke or 4 stroke, which do you prefer?

At idle they make much less smoke and the smoke stays underwater. I have a 40hp 2 stroke and I've never noticed the smoke unless I'm running it on muffs in the driveway.

2 stroke or 4 stroke, which do you prefer?

Both are good for different reasons. A newer 4 stroke will have less maintenance and repair issues. An older 2 stroke will be easier to work on and will have lower weight. If budget was not an issue, I'd go with a new 4 stroke. As I get older, I'm getting less and less interested in fixing...

For those that store outdoors, cover on always?

That might be a million dollar idea. I'm not especially worried about UV fading but leaves and pine needles are a pain. My boat gets out about once a week and it always takes me 20 minutes with a shop vac to get that junk out before we head off to the ramp.

    Wall mount cup holders

I haven't found a folding one that was durable enough. I cut 3" PVC pipe into 4" lengths. Screwed it to the place where I was mounting it with a short screw only through the back of the cup holder near the top and a long screw through the whole cup holder near the bottom. The long screw made...

For those that store outdoors, cover on always?

I used to cover it every time I got back home. It was a pain in the tush. I keep the transom plug out, and keep the trailer tipped to drain. I really don't care if it gets wet in the rain. The only stuff I worry about is the electronics on my side console. I've got a chart plotter/sonar...

    fuel line

If you can show a photo that includes more of the motor we can probably tell you what it is. It appears to be coming from the water jacket so I'm guessing it's the hose to your tell-tale water outlet. But I need to see more of the motor to be sure.

    Transom plate suggestions?

I think that's a good solution and it's one that I've seen suggested before. When considering whether to seal wood against water intrusion, I'm also aware that my waterproof coating prevents water from getting in and from getting out. If the piece isn't completely sealed and ends up...

    Outboard motors

I think I'd let somebody else try it first. One big cylinder stroking back and forth is likely to cause a lot of vibration. I like diesel motors and wouldn't hesitate to put one on a boat - after they work the bugs out.

    Transom plate suggestions?

I would just go with plywood again. It's cheap and easy to work with. If it needs replacing in another 10 years, that's a long time away. Just not pressure treated ply. The copper in the treating chemical will cause aluminum to corrode.

    Buried Prop on 14 semi-V

Don't know that motor but I'm assuming that "3rd pin" is just about in the middle with lots of adjustment up or down? My outboard has 5 or 6 pin positions. If so, I don't think you need a wedge yet - but I really don't know what you're trying to accomplish.

    Outboard motor match

Around here, the standard for a 12' boat would be a 9.9hp. A few have 15hp but not many. Very few fresh water lakes allow gasoline outboards so this is mostly what's used in tidal water. On smaller freshwater lakes, 4-5hp would be enough.

Trailer Question -- Size of Hubs/Bearings and Impact of Heavy Wheels/Tires?

The bearings support the upward force of the tires against the downward force of the trailer. The weight of the tires is supported by the ground, the weight of the trailer is supported by the bearings. If you wanted to put less stress on your bearings, you need to lighten the trailer (and the...

    Weight distribution/battery/fuel tank

Without loading the boat I don't know how to know for sure. It feels like 12 gallons of fuel is a lot in the rear of a 15' aluminum boat. Rule of thumb: 1 gallon of fuel per hour for every 10hp. 50hp outboard = 5 gallons per hour burned. 12 gallons = 2 hours at cruise speed plus a little...

    New Grizzly 1448 and '21 Merc 15hp Won't Plane?

"long shaft" means different things to different manufacturers but to me a long shaft is 20-22 inches. What's the shaft length on your motor? A log shaft on a 17.5" transom seems a bit deep but I don't know the specs on either. If the prop is too deep, it will raise the bow and make it hard...

Quick Question: Switch Panel and Fuse Block -- With or Without Neg Bus?

A negative terminal strip makes wiring much easier but I prefer one that's separate from the fuse panel. Trying to get all of the positive and negative wires to fit inside the fuse block is tight. You can get switch panels that take standard rocker switches and have standard round openings for...
