    1978 Starcraft SUS 16ft - Rebuild and Fix'er up

Glad you are finding some helpful info KrazyAboutTin. I will take a look at my boat and see what those holes look like. It's probably a better idea to keep them open and rinse the salt out, rather than try to block them off. It would only take a small leak to get the saltwater trapped inside...

    Johnson 48 SPL Reverse "Lock"

The cable goes from that lever into the side of the tilt assist ram, there is a fitting on the side of the ram. Mine seems to "do something" but it doesn't lock the motor, I can still lift it with the lever in either position. Going to keep investigating this.... I did lift the motor and set it...

    Maintenance Schedule

If I had a new or newer engine I would probably be quite diligent in the maintenance. I expect I will probably change oil as needed on my Honda kicker, once a year or more (less than 1qt for that). Will check/change gearcase oil once a year or as needed also for both engines. Spark plugs as...

    1978 Starcraft SUS 16ft - Rebuild and Fix'er up

Had the whole last week off and worked on the boat most of the time, when not distracted by my nephew haha 8) Got a LOT done, the transom is completed, wiring is probably about 90% done. I have tons of pictures but will get to them later. The last big time consuming items are the console lid...

    15hp for a 14' boat?

Yep the Honda 8HP 4 stroke I bought/traded from my neighbor must have 100's of hours on it and still starts right up on like the 2nd pull. It's a 1998 model. I see them on craigslist occasionally, and they keep their value too.

    Trolling motor 50 amp breaker

If all wire is sized correctly and no other issues the wire will probably still get warm with max load on it, but you should be able to hold the wire for a little bit at least before it's uncomfortable to grasp. If you have a multimeter, you can do a quick check and see how much resistance is...

    Soft plastic storage..

I like the idea of those bait binders for the soft plastics in bags. Here is what I am talking about Berkley Bait Notebook I can't bring myself to spend $10 on a piece of nylon fabric and 2 rings though... I'm thinking to buy some of the rings in bulk and build some binders that are more...

    Locating Screw Holes

Looks real nice. Just have to make sure every single image you upload is inserted "inline", otherwise it just piles on at the bottom. Just found that out the other night, was confused as to what was happening for a while...

    1978 Starcraft SUS 16ft - Rebuild and Fix'er up

Auxiliary Battery Install Continued Here are the 3 circuit breakers placed for mockup. This turned out to be a good spot. One breaker goes to each switch panel (2) and the third breaker goes to the back of the boat where it will go to an ACR and a On/Off/Combine switch. It's the Blue Sea...

    1978 Starcraft SUS 16ft - Rebuild and Fix'er up

5/19/2021 Update Continued OK on to the boat itself (still transom related). I had several holes from old transducer installs that are no longer needed. I showed my first repair attempt above with the small aluminum can disc cut outs. I "upgraded" my tools for hole repairs.... (dad suggested...

    1978 Starcraft SUS 16ft - Rebuild and Fix'er up

5/19/2021 Update Making progress over the weekends :D Onto the pictures! The transom board is 95% complete. I have one small void in the plywood to add epoxy to, then it's done/ready to install. I was hoping to get it installed this coming weekend, but will see how the weather pans out. This...

    Locating Screw Holes

What you were looking for is called a "T-nut" very commonly used in upholstery. They attach from the backside of the wood, so they can't pull through, and then you thread your fastener in from the frontside. Pretty much all boat seats (or any small upholstered small seats) with a wood base use...

Hard to remove plywood from transom

Sounds like a good plan. If you get any pics along the way I'd like to see.

    Anyone use a Cable Buddy?

I think the cable part is fine. I inspected the pivot tube better since the engine is off the boat, and it's corroded and pitted inside the tube. Going to try and hone/polish the inside of the tube and see what that does. Dangar marine had videos on exactly that, should be pretty simple. Here's...

    Anyone use a Cable Buddy?

Ah so it is partly due to the dynamics of the steering/motor forces. I watched a few of the Dangar marine videos, definitely good info. I see my tilt tube is pretty pitted and ugly inside and he had a good video about that, so I will try to sand or hone it out smoother and it should help some.

Oh I see he has a few videos on this, going to check those out. Thanks.

    Anyone use a Cable Buddy?

Anyone on here have experience with the Cable Buddy by Davis Instruments, used to lubricate the steering cable for remote controls? I had much more resistance when steering to right than to the left. I lubricated the steering linkage shaft that goes through the motor mount, and that helped some...
