Battery drain, Mariner 40EL (2-stroke 2 cylinder)- help diagnose please?

Thanks in advance for pointers-- My old Mirrocraft with Mariner 40 EL 2-stroke has a battery drain problem. Here are some things I've noticed: - Battery charges fine when underway, voltmeter reads going up to 12.2 volts while running. - The battery will drain really fast when parked. Fast...

Mariner 40 EL no tilt- can I use a wood block when approaching the beach?

Thanks, I will make a block. I have some places to fasten it while in use so it doesn't fall off or get tangled. I use a transom saver for trailering. It takes a few minutes to attach it but gives great peace of mind.

Mariner 40 EL no tilt- can I use a wood block when approaching the beach?

My old Mariner (Yamaha) 40 hp does not have electric tilt. It only locks in the up position. Would there be any problem for the motor if I rigged up a block to hold the motor up when approaching the boat ramp or the beach? I thought I better ask before potentially damaging something! Thanks...

Transducer inside the bilge of an aluminum boat?

I found a transducer for aluminum called Alumaducer. They are too expensive for me to bother with, but it's nice to know they make them. https://store.vexilar.com/products/open-water/open-water-transducers/alumaducer.html

Transducer inside the bilge of an aluminum boat?

My garmin transducer is working fine trailing off the starboard side of the transom. But I have seen a lot folks driving fiberglass pangas in Mexico simply place the transducer in the bilge and it works well. This makes me want to try it on my 16' aluminum MirroCraft. Has anyone viewing this...

Installing powerhead Mariner/Yamaha 40 hp 2-stroke. How much to re-assemble first?

RESOLVED I figured it all out and the motor is running well again. I might find a timing light to check the timing more precisely and make some minor adjustments to the throttle linkage. Thanks for your help,

Installing powerhead Mariner/Yamaha 40 hp 2-stroke. How much to re-assemble first?

If someone has a diagram or can check their old mariner 40, I sure would appreciate it. Where do the leads from the choke solenoid go???!!? I have everything back together with no trouble at all. But for the life of me I can't see where the leads from the choke solenoid go. This sits above...

Installing powerhead Mariner/Yamaha 40 hp 2-stroke. How much to re-assemble first?

Hi, I am installing the powerhead on 1987 Mariner (Yamaha) 450 hp 2 cylinder 2-stroke. Here are my questions for the helpful pros who've done this so many times. Thanks in advance. How much should I attach to the powerhead before placing it onto the platform of the leg of the motor? Is it best...

40 hp Mariner 2-stroke big problem after I hit a rock...

When I took the powerhead off the engine, I discovered a big hole in the crankcase (photos). So I bought a salvaged powerhead from the same group of serial numbers. It has 130/130 compression and cycled with no issues when spun with a starter. So I think this used powerhead will be plug-n-play...

40 hp Mariner 2-stroke big problem after I hit a rock...

Well, it turns out the top piston is broken. The lower unit is fine. I found a mechanic who is going to take the powerhead apart and we will decide if it's worth fixing. He thinks he can source the parts, so it's a matter of how much it will cost to repair. Comments welcome!

40 hp Mariner 2-stroke big problem after I hit a rock...

Thanks, I do believe it is Yamaha built. It would be awesome to get power trim. If I had it, this might not have happened.

40 hp Mariner 2-stroke big problem after I hit a rock...

Thanks, will pull that apart tomorrow and report back. I hope I can find a lower unit for it. I am in Baja California Mexico and am hoping some old Mariner motors are still around.

40 hp Mariner 2-stroke big problem after I hit a rock...

Thanks for any pointers on what to look for when I dive into sorting out what broke in my 1987 Mariner 40EL. I have an old Mariner 2-stroke 40hp that broke yesterday. I hit a rock and bent the prop. Got that straight enough to run fine with some acceptable vibration considering the prop...

    Springbok Owners?

That would be a great boat for Baja in the Gulf of California. It would be easy to launch from beaches and be fairly safe for a small boat.

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

Thanks, It is starting instantly and running great now, so I will do some trials with this as a sort of emergency training. I think it dies quickly if I pull the choke.

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

Mine does not have a tiller. Please correct me if I am wrong here--- When you say unplug end of control cable, that would mean disconnecting the wire harness inside the motor? That is great to know in case ignition switches fail. Thanks again,

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

Thanks for this comment. Pull starting this motor, even cold, is not difficult. How do I bypass the switches so I can pull-start it if necessary? Thanks!

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

I guess so! Mine would not start the other day and I think it was an ancient non-marine toggle switch that had replaced the original kill switch. I replaced it with a good kill switch and now it's been fine. Happy boating,

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

I have a mariner 40 EL. I deleted the automatic oiling machine and use pre-mix. I think that 50:1 is a bit oily and the plugs do foul in time. If you keep the carbs clean and always have new plugs handy (5 mins to change both) it runs like a workhorse. It's the easiest motor to work on I've...
