New helm came in, but I haven’t been able to install it. Leaving now for camp. Probably will wait and install next week. Happy Thanksgiving.

I tried flipping the bracket, but that left the TD too high. So ended moving bracket up 1/2” and then centered screws in middle of slot. I then slightly tilted the tail of the TD down. Just slightly. I’ll report back after I use it. Probably will be Friday as we are staying at my In Laws camp...

Garmin said 1/8 for fiberglass and 3/8 for aluminum hulls.

Today I went hunting and the steering is a lot better. Yeah the boat now stays pretty straight when let go. New cable must be breaking in some bc it was smooth and not jerky at all. Looking forward to new helm next weekend.

Just got back from hunting. While the spray isn’t tall anymore, it’s still kicking up on the motor. I think raising it 1/2 to 3/4 will help a lot. Should try again for Thanksgiving weekend.

Transducer is reading fine. The spray is coming into boat though. I’m trying LDUBS idea.

Yeah I’ve been informed that it won’t be much better and that going hydraulic will still have play. Nonetheless, it is much smoother now with new cable. Much safer. Hopefully the new helm will reduce the stiffness a bit more. We’ll see.

By the way the readings work great where it currently mounted. Depth works at 35mph plus. So I think I can raise it some before readings at speed suffer. Only problem is I don’t have anymore upward adjustment left bc I’m at the limit of the bracket. Have to move bracket up more requiring more...

I ordered a new helm last night. This morning I moved linkage to that hole furthest away from motor thinking that would increase leverage. It did. Much better. I’m going put it in the water for a test ride today.

Plus the new cable is way more hard to turn than before. I lubed the rod, both inner/outer real good. I even took a severe bend out of the routing of the cable. It should be very smooth now, but it’s stiffer.

I think it’s more than 4-5” actually.

Well I replaced the cable with a new one. The tilt tube actually looked great. Looked like a clean gun barrel. I cleaned it out anyway and lubed the new rod both inside tube and out and installed everything. Still have the 4-5” of play and steering feels even stiffer now. So I guess the helm is...

I agree, shouldn’t need hydraulic steering on a 90. I think I’m getting new helm and cable. Just start fresh with both. I can’t order a cable until I figure out if I’m moving the center console forward. Cleaning out the pivot tube will help a lot too.

After 17 years pretty sure the cable is stretched out. So I could apply that $150 towards a hydraulic steering kit.

Yeah I don’t like it very much. It’s a little sketchy. I’m trying to figure out what the problem is. I like my stuff working correctly. Even thinking about trying a hydraulic steering kit. I see them for $440 on Amazon.

Mine won’t be that forward. It’s towards the rear already, I think a foot will be perfect for my situation.
