Help with 1982 Johnson 15 HP - water in bottom cylinder

My mistake mentioning the points - that was on my 1966. I just tried a few things on the 82. I think I may have a fuel pump problem. I noted that the fuel filter showed no signs of fuel. Primed it again to fill the filter. Started up at low idle again but recovered completely within 15...

Help with 1982 Johnson 15 HP - water in bottom cylinder

Howdy All, I've been working on this "project motor" for the better part of a year. Every time I think I'm close, Murphy's Law kicks in, and kicks me in the you-know-what. I won't go through the history other than to say I've done just about everything needed when buying a used motor that sat...

1966 Johnson 9.5 Low Speed mixture screw removal?

Howdy All, This 9.5 has been running like a scalded dog for almost 2 years. Recently I have had to slowly adjust the low speed mixture richer to keep a good idle. At this point making it richer is not solving the rough idle "cough" that causes the motor to shake. Other than the idle the...

Basic Tips for a New Outboard Owner?

Derek, I put Fuel Stabilizer in my fuel when I buy it as a precaution. This way I don't ever have to even think about how old the fuel is. However, to date I have consistently burned my fuel with great regularity. Also as a precaution, when I trailer the boat, before I pull out...

Doc, that red bushing with the "key" is the only thing on my 15 with regards to the Low Speed needle. CMOS

    Splattered Wheels

I have this issue. Lots of splatter on the back side. Forgive the ignorance, but I assume there are seals to replace? Are these seals of a standard size? How do I know what replacement seals to buy? Thanks for any help and I hope I'm not hijacking this thread. CMOS

newbie with '73 25hp Evinrude carb question

Hard to see clearly but note that the throttle plate should be almost, or completely "closed" when you engage the choke. You may have to make some adjustments to the linkage to make this happen, but you do seem to be on the right track. Keep us posted. CMOS

    Wot speed and outboard height

You could get something like a Mini-Jacker plate to get that 2" height, for right at about $100. However, what I don't know is just how much speed, if any, you will gain from that. I've seen a handful of threads like this before - guys asking if a low set motor is worth the trouble and or...

newbie with '73 25hp Evinrude carb question

The wire itself will be fine. The air temperature inside the cowling is not that high. My only concern with what you did is the crimp terminations. I'm anal, and I don't like them. At some point, the crimp connections will oxidize. I always solder these connections. A soldered connection...

newbie with '73 25hp Evinrude carb question

The fuel screen is there to help but I would still suggest you install a true inline fuel filter between the fuel pump and the carb. This will filter out even very small pieces of debris. Als0, at 7+ years old, just go ahead and replace the fuel lines. It's literally only a few bucks, and...

newbie with '73 25hp Evinrude carb question

To the both of you: new fuel lines and fuel filter. Before hooking up the new fuel lines to your newly cleaned carbs, use the primer bulb on the fuel tank line to flush the lines. Get out any debris in the system so it doesn't get into you nice;y cleaned carb. Good luck. 25 HP is a really...

    1966 Johnson 9.5 - slow speed knob re-center?

Yep - LeeRoy has been a big help to me. In fact he has 2 pictures of my motor on his web site for this date rage of motors. Apparently I had some good, clear pics of a couple certain engine areas that he wanted to use. I do not have a C-clip on the inside of my front panel for...

    1966 Johnson 9.5 - slow speed knob re-center?

Howdy All, My 1966 Johnson 9.5 (MQ-12A) runs like a scalded dog. I could not be happpier with this motor. One thing I would like to do is to re-center the slow speed mixture knob on the front panel. I have it adjusted right at the 9-o'clock position so I would like to re-center it to the...
