That's not what the 3 cyl acts like when the sensor eye is going bad.

Its been 5 years since that post but yeah mine is fixed, lol. The reason this thread is active is because someone else was having a similar problem.

Its the pickup sensor under the flywheel (replace at the same time as powerpack). I think its OMC part # 0584824, but I would double check on boats.net or similar for your model number. (Sent via PM also)

I have an 81 evinrude 35 pull start and I need a motor cover. What years would be compatible for that motor? Any differences between a 25 and 35 cover? Thanks guys.

Found the problem, bad stator. Resistance tests did not show a problem, but replacing the stator fixed it. Luckily I had a parts motor.

My 96 Johnson 40 2 cyl has been randomly missing/popping at upper RPMs for a while and was getting worse. I thought it was fuel problem but replacing the fuel pump, cleaning carbs, new fuel etc. did not help. I've checked compression, 157-158 psi on both cylinders. Spark looked OK but a little...

I would expect more out of that setup. My 1648 with Tohatsu 40/25 (w/ full tank cooler and wife) will easily hit 26-7 going up and 30+ down. Also agree with Andy on the speed estimate. Weldbilts seem fairly heavy. My 1742 weldbilt weighs a lot more than my 1648 blazer.

So, I'll answer my own post... The fuel pump diaphragm was bad causing all kinds of problems. While I had everything apart, I replaced the 40 carbs with 50s and installed Boyesen reeds. Runs very well now. Baseline setting for the fuel screws is 2.5-3.5 turns out.

I have a 1996 Johnson 40 hp (28 jet) which has a bit of stumble off idle (seems to be running rich, lots of fuel smoke). It runs well enough at top end, but it just takes a while to get there and to smooth out. I'm not real familiar with outboard carb adjustment. Any recommended baseline...
