89 Evinrude 90 HP V4 hard starting issue?

Friends: I have a 1989 Evinrude 90 HP V4 outboard. A VRO model. I am the original owner. It starts hard, especially if its not been run for a while (like a few days). Cranks fine, but just does not seem to easily start up. I'll often have to crank it 20-30 times just to get it to catch...

Difference between aluminum and stainless props

I have dinged up the aluminum prop on my 1989 2-stroke Evinrude 90 HP, and am thinking of replacing it with a stainless one. The current version is 13x19, which seems to be OK, although not sure if it is optimum.. I remember seeing somewhere that stainless props behave differently than...

Boat Wanted Gregor Alaskan/Baja or Angler 16

Been looking for one of those Gregor "Alaskan/Baja" or "Angler 16" boats (preferably the Alaskan/Baja), but they seem as rare as hens teeth out East where I am. I'm pretty firm on the make and model. Anyway if you are aware of one that might be available, I'd appreciate knowing, either on this...

Engine Cover Seal - for Johnson or evinrude

Have several motors that the engine cover seal has hardened or crusted away in places. Can't find replacements online. This is the part that is stapled onto the cover that makes a nice vibration free seal with the engine housing, and alo keeps the rain out. Reminds me of a fancy version...

Mercury 50 ELPT - .....power tilt?

Looking at a new Mercury 50 ELPT. I believe PT stands for Power Trim, which allows one to vary the angle of the motor in the water while underway. In days of old if it had power trim and tilt the acronym would have been PTT I'm interested in a power TILT functionality such as the situation...

Value of 3 gal double line Johnson/Evinrude pressue tank

Gents: What would you put the as a value on a 3 gal double line Johnson/Evinrude pressue tank? Came off a mid 50's Johnson. A few datails: 1) just a little rust outside. Its been coated with some kind of off-white coating which has helped keep the rust at bay, but that will be stripped...

Klamath v. Gregor in 16' Alaskan

Friends: Looking at both these west coast boats, and being back East cannot go over to a dealership to kick the tires. These are quite comparable, at least on paper. Not so concerned about the differences in options and layouts, but in overall build quality and seaworthiness...

    Refurbishing wood oars for Tinnies

Friends: As my tin boats continue to age gracefully, the oars are aging way faster and not elegantly! Of special concern is that the oar blades are delaminating as vertical cracks are showing up where they were glued together. Also they are beat up on the very end (tip) where they banged into...

    Screw on fuel filters

My normal way to handle fuel filtration issues is to add one of those in-line see-through filters with a couple feet of where the fuel line plugs into the engine. The result is that there is a filter in the tank (the pickup), another one "in-line" and a third at the fuel pump. That said, I am...

    Tiny waters John boat setup?

Friends: A couple years ago I saw a gent on a local pond (shallow, weedy and full of fish) with no ramp, that had wrestled a short but wide johnboat (probably about a 1040) and had it all set up. As I recall he had bow mounted a manual trolling motor, and had set up a raised swivel seat in the...

Looking for bow casting for old aluminum canoe

Friends: I am looking for a bow casting for an old aluminum canoe, of uncertain lineage. Don't think its a Grumman but looks a bit like one. Anyway the picture attached shows what the casting on one end looks like. I need to find something similar for the other end. Doesn't have to match -...

    Silicone bead suitable for aluminum?

Is anyone aware of an aluminum friendly silicone (or other such substance) that I can use to smooth over the edge of some aluminum patches I have installed on a boat seat? The PO of this boat cut a bunch of crazy holes in the seats, and I have patched them by cutting sheet aluminum to fit then...

    Potential flooring material?

Saw this dimpled rubber material on the bow of a showroom boat (a Lowes at Cabelas), and am thinking this might just be just excellent as a flowing material: Rubber, high traction, low noise, wash off with a hose, etc. Does anyone know about this or any similar material? I'm putting a new...

    Lowes boat clearance at Cabelas!

Wandered over to the boat department at Cabelas and learned that, following the sale of Cabelas to Bass Pro, the stores will be selling Tracker boats, and closing out the Lowes inventory they have in stock. Sample price: Lowe's 1040 about $100 off from the normal $640 pricetag. Looks like...

Straightening out crunched corner on tinny

I am the third generation of my family to own this boat: a 12' Dura tech. I have pictures from the 60's where my grandpa was taking me out fishing in it. Lots of memories. My son will get it when I pass. Its a nice lightweight 12' john with a modified vee in the bow. The plan is to iron out...

    Flex coat

I just brought home a 12' aluminum john boat from the 1960's (maybe even earlier). Someone had painted over a number of holes that had been shot into it with some of that black wonder compound stuff. Looks like the type they advertise on the TV where they coat a screen door in the bottom of a...

    Cure for cancer?

Gents: The transom on a 70 something tinny is bubbling up through the paint in several places. The dreaded aluminum cancer. What is the cure? Do I just wire brush the heck out of it, then fill with marine tex, sand and paint?

    Repurposing old props?

Puttering around i have come across some aluminum props i have pulled off old 9.9 and 15 hp OMC motors. These have been dinged up and one of them has a 3/4 inch long chunk taken out of one blade. Sure would be nice to get these back into action. I guess the options are DIY or take them...
