Thanks for the help! I found enough courage to try tapping on it (gently, of course) with a hammer and it came off with just a little bit of resistance.

It’s got a key… there doesn’t appear to be anything to prevent the gear from coming off the end of the shaft, just making sure I’m not missing anything…

Update: found a pinion gear on evilbay for less than $20. Question: I don’t see any obvious way of holding the gear to the shaft, I’m assuming it’s a press-fit?

Well, I had some time to take the boat out this morning… it’s got issues… It doesn’t like to idle. It will cough and sometimes die, but as soon as you give it throttle it smooths out. I expected this though, I had the carb off to access the sediment bowl to fix a leak and I’m sure I didn’t get...
