    My First Aluminum Boat Project

Here's my plan for the transom. I'm thinking about 1x3 maybe 1x2 rectangular tubing.

Is Your Motor Clamped, Bolted, or Both

I'm curious to see what is common practice of fastening the motor to the transom on these boats? Is yours simply clamped on, bolted on, or both? I noticed at BassPro that they were bolted on in four places with no clamps. A friend of mine has his clamped on only. Mine was clamped on and...

    Courtesy Lights

I plan to mount mine underneath surfaces or at least with a shroud over the top of them so I can't "see" the actual lighting units. Also, I would recommend putting them on a dimmer switch like the dash lights in most cars. You want them as dim as possible to see what you need to do to keep...

    Can't beleive this...wow

You didn't get to see the good stuff then. The whole thing was impressive, but around the last minute it got real interesting.

    My First Aluminum Boat Project

Yeah, it is manageable, but I figure if I am going to tear it down to do a new floor and change the decking, I might as well do everything and do it right. Hopefully tomorrow I can get some estimates on welding on the hull and building a transom.

    Fuel Line

I like to disconnect my line at the motor before cutting it off and letting it run until it dies. It helps to get the fuel out of the the lines/carb. It may not be a big issue if you run your motor a lot, but with people saying how ethanol can eat seals, etc. I like to be on the safe side. I...

I would get red. I believe it has the least effect on your night vision. White is the worst for night vision. A quick search pulled this site which should help. Looks like they reccomend a blue-green with a dimmer. https://stlplaces.com/night_vision_red_myth/

    My First Aluminum Boat Project

I got started on ripping the transom out today. Flathead fasteners on a boat is a terrible idea, especially through the transom. I could only get one out with a socket and screwdriver. Nothing that a side grinder and cut off wheel can't fix. I think I ended up cutting about 8-10 bolts out...

    Who has the fastest tin??

    Opinions on Console Placement Please

I guess I will keep it near the middle. Far enough forward to help with vision, but back far enough to maintain a decent ride. Ideally, I would like to have a set up for shallow rivers and one for intercoastal waters and deeper rivers, but I will see what I can do to manage both.

    Opinions on Console Placement Please

What does everyone on here prefer for console placement? The boat that I am working on used to have a side console towards the rear of the boat. I would really like a center console since I am a stickler for symmetry and order, but my boat has 40" floor, so that is out of the question. I...

    My First Aluminum Boat Project

I got the rest of the console pulled today. Pulled all of the front deck that I wanted to. It came out in three pieces. The front piece was riveted down the sides of the boat. Since I am going to rebuild a deck anyways, I decided I would leave that as is to prevent a lot of headaches...

    My First Aluminum Boat Project

I got to looking at what I could to do today, and decided to strip the boat out and start building from scratch. The rear deck had plywood under it that needed to be replaced, and there was no way to do it properly with out ripping the deck out. So I decided instead of replacing the wood, I...

    My First Aluminum Boat Project

Do ya'll think that the transom is something that can easily be fixed just by replacing the wood or will it need metal work also?

    Welded vs. Riveted

Length by Width. 1648 = 16' long and 48" wide at the floor

threadlocker, loctite, etc. and nylon locknuts?

I wouldn't worry about the loctite personally, but worst case if it destroyed the polymer, it would still bind the metal of the nut to the bolt.

    My First Aluminum Boat Project

Yeah, it looks pretty bad, but I want to get it in the water to check for leaks first. I'm not planning on running it hard. I just want to check for leaks. That way, I can take the boat to a fab shop to get leaks and the transom fixed at the same time. While boat is off of the trailer I can...

    My First Aluminum Boat Project

Alright, I know I have been off and on this project, but I am finally done with school for the summer and about to start back work until December. So not only will I have time to make progress, but I will have some money to spend to do this right. After venturing into my Mercury 50, it looked...

    My First Aluminum Boat Project

Does anyone know where to find parts for this motor? Under the front cover it says that it is a 1978 Mercury M-500. Some other identifying characteristics are that it is a 4 cylinder, two stroke, coil packs not distributor, electric start, thunderbolt ignition, two carbs. I'm pretty sure I...

    My First Aluminum Boat Project

Man, am I in for a world of hurt when I clean this aluminum up. I spent about 15 minutes on the rear gusset. It looks great, but I'm predicted a good day's worth of work to get rest of the boat looking like that. Probably a whole weekend if I do the sides as well. I think I might make it to...
