    1979 Mercury 40hp 2 Cylinder - Help

Pics of boat with replaced motor on posted on the boat project page, rather than here. I won't work the camo painted '79 until this winter, if I don't sell it first. Price will triple if I get it running right! :D

79 Bass Tracker Rebuild - Done!

Well, the fishing wasn't so great for us on this maiden fishing trip, but the boat was great. The boys did some casting, etc. We also used the trolling motor to pull some planer boards - worked great for hours on end. Here's a couple of shots of her sitting in the water. I sure love the...

    1979 Mercury 40hp 2 Cylinder - Help

Yes-I have to get some pics up of us on the water with the boat. I ended up stumbling into a good deal on a 1980 40 hp merc. So I swapped engines and controls and away we went. Now I have to decide whether to tinker with the 1979 or sell it to some enterprising individual. We got loads of...

79 Bass Tracker Rebuild - Done!

Brian - the vinyl goes down nicely, however, I was not impressed with their recommeded glue. I used it, but I used the 3M spray for corners and edges, as it tacks up really fast and seemed to hold well. Of course, working with wood, I was able to secure everything with Marine staples. I...

1999 16ft Polar Kraft Conversion Project

I have a 14ft v-bottom running with a 10 hp. I can make 15mph with just me in it. When I throw another person and some gear in it, that top speed drops to 10mph. You need to add up the weight and see what it amounts to. If significant, like 150# plus, you will see a meaningful drop in speed...

    1979 Mercury 40hp 2 Cylinder - Help

I have pulled the motor off the boat. I am going to soak the powerhead with seafoam and take the needle above the float out. Then I'll bench test to see if it will run. When I started with the motor, I think I shot the cylinders with oil...but nothing like soaking in Seafoam. Does it make...

    1979 Mercury 40hp 2 Cylinder - Help

Can someone explain to me what sticking reeds and a dry cylinder means? Can sticky reeds be repaired by soaking in seafoam, similar to the suggestion about filling the cylinders with seafoam?

    Derek's Tracker TX-17 rebuild

I generally don't think it is possible to have "dry" storage on a boat, especially if the bottom of the storage space is open to the bottom of the boat. However, my war eagle has a bench seat, the lid of which completely wraps over the top of the sides. It is not possible to get a boat wetter...

    Derek's Tracker TX-17 rebuild

FYI - I put the dual TM batteries in the front - with my two boys and myself on the water, it was a pretty wet ride. We never really got her spinning due to the motor problems, but FYI. Don't know if a heavier motor would counter that...

    1979 Mercury 40hp 2 Cylinder - Help

Kago - you are talking about where the water pump hooks up to the metal pipe riser that goes up to the bottom of the engine from the lower unit, right? Does this stop leakage at that location or just give flexibility for a better fit/alignment up top? It has been several months now since I did...

    Derek's Tracker TX-17 rebuild

For next to nothing, I pushed back in my harness and soldered in new wires, just to see if I could make it work. That aspect of my motor does work. Don't know for how long, but I am not expecting a 1979 engine to last forever, just long enough to restore my fun money reserves. Actually...

    Derek's Tracker TX-17 rebuild

If you want, I can grab some night shots of my lighting and put them up... What is the story with your old merc...are we having similar situations?

79 Bass Tracker Rebuild - Done!

Thanks. The stenciling was pretty easy - just need extra hands to hold it against the contour of the boat. Those hands do get painted. Used a mylar stencil from cabelas. Pretty cheap and just kept it clean as we went. Used a rattle can for the light colored stencil work.

    1979 Mercury 40hp 2 Cylinder - Help

Well guys, you both make great points. I have come so far and the coin for a new motor could set me back a year. I'll try the float thing and try to figure out where the thermostat is... I was kind of thinking that if the compression is down between 110-120, it might not be worth much more...

79 Bass Tracker Rebuild - Done!

Well, looks like I might be shopping for a replacement for this engine. I promised myself I would not spend very much on this old girl. The problems I am having are serious enough for me to look for much newer power. Maybe 2002-2003 or there abouts. My kids will be using the boat, we love...

    1979 Mercury 40hp 2 Cylinder - Help

Will - thanks. I took it to a shop today and they said not to spend any more money on it. Sad for me, but you have to consider it might just not be worth spending more on it. So, I guess I can start looking for a replacement motor. I'll make someone a great deal on this one - I just think...

    1979 Mercury 40hp 2 Cylinder - Help

wasilvers - I changed the float - just did not remove the levers - they looked right. So the needle and seat that operates by force of the float did not come out - just flushed a great deal. Confident there is no goop in there. Worst case is the prior rebuild put something together wrong -...

    1979 Mercury 40hp 2 Cylinder - Help

Thermostat - interesting thought. I eliminated because the water coming out of the engine was very hot. If the THermostat was stuck closed, causing overheating, don't know that it would be so hot coming out. Any other way to check? Also - I pulled the carb last night. The one item I am not...

    1979 Mercury 40hp 2 Cylinder - Help

yeah - it was really quite hot, but you could put your hand on the outside. Compression was fine - it was 115-120. For it to get hot with pee coming out, it seems it must be lean? Don't know how else it could be so hot with water flowing.. Even the water in the pee stream was very hot.

    1979 Mercury 40hp 2 Cylinder - Help

Her she sits at the dock - trying to get her to start... Here's a shot of her running on the water... After this run, we tinkered for quite a while trying to get her to run right...nothing seemed to work. Man, was she hot when we got to the dock. Read my previous post for more details -...
