    Riveted Boat Question

Heelo All, been quite awhile since I have been on here. Got out of fishing and sold my boats for a bit but getting back into it now. I stop by here often to read but rarely post but was hoping someone could answer this question for me. I am looking at a 1995 Sylvan 16ft boat to build into a...

Im sure someone could mod that car and make it float. And I was talking values there, not fishability.

Need some cumulative brainstorming from you guys

Durabak is used on Naval ships, my guess is it would hold up to a tin boat.

Panicking at size of boat needed! Talk me down, please.

why does it have to stay in the garage? you can get a really nice 100% water proof cover for it to custom fit for a couple hundred bucks and leave it beside the house.

    need help with mounting seats

i would go with this idea, its what I was talking about a few post up, The manufacturer riveted a square piece of steel larger then the seat base to the aluminum then screwed the seat base to it, it will never give away

    Hydro turf or carpet

I dont know the answer but in my opinion anything is better then carpet. I hated my flooring after I used carpet, it stinks and gets dirty. The wife didnt like walking into the garage and smelling fish. I would bypass the hydra turf as well and roll the floors in a bed liner type material. I...

    need help with mounting seats

Walmart sells pedestal seat bases, my Lowe 1448 came with those installed from the factory, I suggest those. Lowe riveted steel to the bow of the boat and mounted the base to that, it will not give at all.

    Decking-When and when not to.

The rivets will flex a bit with the water and weight, welds do not and if they are weak they break. Airplanes are riveted for that reason.

Panicking at size of boat needed! Talk me down, please.

6'2" 235lbs here and I move a 1448 Big Jon with no problems. I have fished from a 10ft jon boat remember trying to stay in the boat more then actually fishing.

Adding a solid floor - wood/vinyl vs aluminum

Just rivet the aluminum sheets to the ribs of the boat, I would use the lightest aluminum that would allow some flex so it forms to the slight dip in the hull, if you do need to build it up use 1/8" 1x1 aluminum angle, and yes use rivets if you can. If you think you need bracing running between...

Adding a solid floor - wood/vinyl vs aluminum

Been a loooooong time since being on this site, but if you can afford it, go with aluminum then roll the boat with Durabak or Grizzly Grip coating, will last forever. Duck hunting/carpet/wood doesn't go together very well.

    Sealing wood

If you read the instruction it states that 1 light coat is recommended (Thompsons water sealer) After the first coat the wood is "sealed" (if you believe it) The additional coats just sit on top of the first coat and is not absorbed into the wood leaving a tacky feel that collects dirt.

couple questions (seats, paint, trolling motor)

you didn't mention how wide your boat is, but you should be fine with the 7" base. I would think 1 gallon would about take care of it, depends on how many coats needed. The paint can will have the sq footage coverage in the description. Take your boat WxLxH to roughly figure sq footage. This...

    Carpet Removal / Install?

I just used a wire brush attachment on a drill to remove the carpet. Wear a mask  If you don't glue the carpet to the plywood it will start to roll when it stretches.
