The bottom edge of the side supports are cut to match the contour of the hull so they wont dig in unless the rivets break off or something.As for the stern hatches, they are indeed structural, I built the stern framing as 2 rectangles that are attached to the bench, outside corner of the boat and the transom support in the middle. The hatches rest right on top of the angle and is very solid.</blockquote>
