Finally feel far enough to start my thread. Background: I bought the boat and trailer 3 years ago for $350. Only did it because the seller needed money. After 3 years, my kids are getting bigger and the ol' canoe is getting a bit full so I decided to transform the Smokercraft into a fishing machine. I want a floor because I remember how uncomfortable I was as a kid sitting on the bench of my dads flat bottom.

Plan is a basic low sitting floor, nothing fancy, nothing high. I don't need the kids falling out or the boat trying to turtle. As of now I plan to keep the rear seat in place and create a storage area at the bow. Possibly some rod boxes on the side. As I have read and experienced before plans will change often.

The trailer is pretty solid. Will need a new hand winch. A scrub down and some paint. One tire. New lights and wiring. Overall I can't complain.

My biggest concern is how I would like to paint it. My wife and I are US Army veterans. I work with the guys at the Camp Cuervo Archery Club getting bows in hands of deployed service members for R&R in their downtime. We are also working with disabled American heroes (all Veterans are heroes in my eyes) getting them set up with archery gear, taking them hunting, fishing etc. :USA1: All that said I am wanting to paint the boat similar to a flag. I can barely draw a stick figure so I am hoping it doesn't turn out to badly. Right now I am thinking red bottom, white stripe and either a blue stripe with some stars or maybe a blue box with some stars. I am way off the point of paint but when the time comes I will be pulling y'alls ear for some ideas.

Ok for the pics  :

Rotten plywood transom... was a bit scared of what I would find under it.

From the bow. SSDD for these boats.

Decent ding in the hull. Not through the metal thank goodness.

Hole in the hull. Covered in some sort or rock hard something. I have a feeling this is going to be a pain to deal with.

Owned for 3 years and never put in the water. Scold me later. [-X The first time out for a leak check went great. No leaks.

My kids can't wait for the boat to get done. They want to get fishing!

Too many hours with a chisel, small pry bar and hammer I was able to get the rotten transom wood off. Inside and out. Only a few holes found under it. Best case when I was expecting the worse.

Front seats removed. Definitely will need to do something to replace the side to side structure in the middle.

First of all, thank you for your service.

This should be a fun project. Lots of potential there.
Personally, I would wouldn't try to get it all done before
enjoying some time fishing with the kids, but that's just me.
And nice weather in Minnesota is in short supply, LOL.
Of course, making sure it's safe and comfortable is a priority.

Keep us posted. Enjoy!

It is frequently a pain, and often deeply frustrating, but--at least in my case--you get a real satisfaction out of seeing the finished (or, almost finished, "just one more thing...") result.

Persevere, and best wishes.

:)
