Looking for advise on a restoration. I stumbled onto a near perfect boat/ motor. Its been in storage for a very long time. Apparently the Evinrude speedtwin is its original motor. Model # 28202 C makes it a '62 28 hp. It turns free by hand, shows no sign of repair other than the kill button and the pull start screws have marks. 4 stroke engines I know well, 2cyc outboards not so much. IF I have a good motor that's been sitting for 20 years minimum I'd hate to screw it up because of a dumb rookie mistake. Its certainly bone dry inside, I haven't even checked it for spark or compression. What precautions should I take before I try it? Were these considered a decent reliable motor?

Putback,

The Evinrudes of that era are very good motors. Well designed and built to last. You will likely need to replace the ignition components located under the flywheel. No problem doing that, and not a lot of $ either. The water pump impeller will need to be replaced as well.

Squirt a little oil, or pre-mix in the spark plug holes before you turn it over too much, and before checking compression.

New gear oil in the lower unit too.

Have fun. Post pics.

Putback,
welcome aboard!
I had the same motor and still have the OEM service manual.
If you would like a copy send me a PM with your email address.
Good luck.

Jasper, thanks for the offer, but I found one on line before your offer. Service manual & parts manual. I misted the cylinders with a kerosene / oil mix tonight and rolled it over a few times. Good blue spark, fuel pump draws. Compression, gear lube, cooling & carb this weekend. If it checks out we'll give it a try unless some one here warns me otherwise?
