Greetings all,

This is my first post here. Great site, with lots of info..... My questions is the motor that was on this unknown year make and model boat keeps jump out and/or will no longer stay in forward. I am assuming its the clutch dog or something along those lines. I have adjusted the linkage but to no avail.
The motor runs great from what I can tell. with the exception that I can not turn off the motor. If this was your boat what would you do. This boat is an alum. 18 foot. Would you swap out the lower unit, replace the forward gear or find an entire replacement motor? Its a console not a stick steer.
Thanks
Joel :?:

i would try and find a donor, gear sets are around, but really pricey. i think around 300-350. try boats.net forum there is a guy who sells used parts. might find a gear set. really easy to reseal and replace the gears.

#-o Not use to looking in the title when I'm reading about the problem. Is this what you're looking for?

sorry, im not sure if its the clutch dog or the forward gear. I spoke to a few boat repair places. one offered to try and swap the lower unit with one they had... that might work.... and one said give up and buy another motor.

I had the same problem with my 25hp Johnson 1979...I replaced the gear set and all is fine now. You can probably find a cheap gear set on eBay. If its just the clutch dog u could try flipping it around...I've heard of people doing this before but I've never tried it

the problem is if the clutch dog is worn and slipping, then assume the forward gear is the same, worn. i have heard of folks taking the gear/dog to a machine shop and having them remove just enough material to allow the clutch to not slip. that of course the dog and gear arent too bad.
if the other shop has a lu, and the lu is rebuilt and installed, it would be cost. if the motor runs really well, compression is all good, that is a hard decision. how much was the quote? if its 300 or so, i would say yes. any more and it would not be worth the $$

just my 2 cents
