flywheel 002.JPGI have been searching the archives for the past half hour and can't get a definitive answer to my problem.....

I wanted to check the timing and stuff on my 1979 Johnson 25 ...
#1 issue was that none of the timing marks are aligned with the mark on the starter bracket. Nowhere close.
#2 issue is there is 3/4 to 7/8" free play in the flywheel .... meaning that I can very easily turn the
flywheel back and forth with my finger tips without moving the pistons - while looking at the top of the piston
when it is Top Dead Center - the piston does NOT move when the flywheel is moved around with my fingers.
is this normal ??? The crankshaft nut on top is tight and will not turn on the crankshaft as if the keyway were the problem.
I hate to pull the flywheel off and find a total nightmare - or worse yet - stranded miles from the dock.

There is nothing more grand than
to be just simply messing around
in an old boat . . . . POGO, 1960

Sounds like the flywheel key or slack in the rods/ wrist pins. I've seen it when I use to build circle cart motors. Tear it down and find out.
