I know that it would be unpractical to used one of these chargers to re-charge my battery. I was wondering if anyone has ever used a 5 Watt Solar panel as Battery maintainer. I fish a lot from my canoe and some times I don't take a trolling motor out with me.

My thought was to use my portable unit(s) to re-charge my battery then connect it to the solar panel to just maintain the battery till the next outing

How long are you waiting between usage?
A 15 watt solar charger puts out around an amp(1)/hour.
So a 5 watt would be around a thrid amp/hour,it will help keep your battery maintained but thats it.IMO

Sorry typed 15 watts equal to an amp,should have been 12 watts.
Amps=Watts/Volts
12 watt/12volt=1amp
Your case:
5W/12V=.42amp....still just good for maintaining.
