converting wheel steer to tiller steer

trying to make tiller steer outta 1981 bass trackerII. Question #1...can the 1981 40 hp merc be converted to a tiller steer? Question #2..if i have to get another motor, what determines if i get short shaft or long shaft? thanks

Replacement tillers for almost every model show up on ebay sooner or later. You'll need to find all the missing parts to make the conversion. The distance from the top of your transom (in the center where the motor sits) to the bottom of your boat is what determines whether you need a long or short shaft. 15ish short shaft, 20ish long shaft, I say ish because it's not always exact.
