Welcome to the board!
The model number is what will let us know what engine you have, yours appears to be incorrect. Go see if one of the first letters you have is actually a number. Part that looks correct may indicate your engine was built in 1986.
So will the horsepower on the cowling as some horsepower engines were only built for a short time.
Photos will also help as well.

Sounds like an early OB to me ... as best I recall it is that prior to 1960 OMC s/n’s were based on the block, through ~1970s the model numbers were 2 or 3 letters and a 2-digit number, where those #s identify the year of production, but not necessarily the calendar year.

After 1970 the OMC model numbers included the HP and year of Mfg’r (built in as a code). For example - J33ELUTA:

J = Johnson
33 = HP
E = Electric start
L = Long (20") shaft
UT = Year of mfg’r in code, see below
A = Production run (sometimes I've heard this last letter many not be there ... ? Pappy will know for sure!)

The 2-digit year code uses the letters of the word "INTRODUCES" to represent the digits 1-0. So the UT would be 73.

I N T R O D U C E S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

That Evinrude should have the model number on a freeze plug in the engine as well as the plate on the transom clamp. Maybe that one is easier to read?

Not necessarily. Later engines only had the serial number on them and replacement powerheads had nothing but a part number or nothing at all.

OMG, Belgium?? Is Bombardier following in Mercury's footsteps now or what?

When the time came to buy my first outboard, it was mostly the uh, "fact" that OMCs were made here but smaller Mercs could end up being Tohatsus or Kik-somethings or whatever that swayed me to the OMC side.

I think I'd better go find me a few more history lessons! :shock:

you can call evinrude and they might be able to look it up
