I've spent the last couple weeks scanning through the last 90 pages of posts to learn how the forum operates and see what kinds of questions have been asked. You don't know what you don't know.
My wife and I are considering buying our first boat. All we really know is that we want it to be all welded aluminum with a modified-V bow and a console. Both of us have bad shoulders so we're looking to go with a console now instead of having to upgrade in the future. While we've never owned a boat, I have experience piloting Navy RHIBS as well as some friends pleasure boats (pontoons and tiller Jons).
Our primary uses will be going to a camp up the Pascagoula River (not extremely shallow but there is usually lots of debris floating down-stream as well as submerged stumps/logs that are not always visible or in the same place) to hunt, fishing in the lakes, bayous, bays and near-shore and crabbing. The camp does not have a pier so we will have to beach the boat on a river bank (mud) with some flush-cut stumps in the area.
We're looking for a boat in the 17-18 ft length. We'll need the ability to carry things up to the camp for weekend stays and possibly carry meat back out (I'm told there's lots of hogs), The wife wants to get a recreational crab license - 4-6 crab pots and coolers looks like they will start eating up deck space fairly quick. We may have a third or even fourth adult onboard travelling to the camp occasionally.
I've looked for used but very, very little in the 17-18 ft range. And I really don't want to pick up a problem someone is trying to get rid of.
I've had no luck finding a new 17 ft boat in my immediate area. I've looked at a Lowe Roughneck 1860 SC with a Mercury 90 and today we looked at an Alumacraft MV 1860 AW CC with a Yamaha F90LA. The Alumacraft is a little less than the the Lowe. It's a little bigger than we wanted and costs a little more than we wanted to spend, but... Buy once, cry once.
Does anyone have any idea how much they draft?
My only other concern is will the trailer fit through my gate into the backyard of the house we're renting. The gate/opening is just over 100 inches.
