As I was browsing the aisles at work at Home Depot today I had a bit of an idea. For good cheap interior lighting, why not use low voltage landscape lighting? They are 12v, low draw (7 watt halogen, 1 watt equivalent) and put out enough light, that if a few were used, the interior of the boat could be adequately lit. The units are built to be out in the elements, so water wont be a problem, and the ones I was looking at today have a diffuser face plate and a louvered face plate. I figured the louvered would be perfect as it would not only protect the light and lens, but would shine the light down so as not to blind you and totally destroy your night vision.
This may be a great budget option to LED's (although there are led versions offered). I have a pheasant hunting trip this weekend that I have been saving money for, but after that I will be going full bore on my boat project and will include at least 4 of these lights (2 fore, 2 aft) in the sides of the deck. I strongly considered running the solar powered versions, but I couldnt find any way to turn them on and off.
If anyone has done this, I would appreciate a review of how well its worked for you, and if no one has, then I will definately give my opinion.
